I am finding that my gas milage in town is approx 7mpg and 14mpg highway. I am using 91 octane gas. Is this normal and, if not, what might be the reason for it?
Hello Robert and good day. You're running way to rich. Should be about 22 mpg highway, city mileage somewhat less but I've never checked it. Do you have black smoke coming out of the exhaust? Do you smell gas anywhere?
Robert,
I just finished a 650 mile trip and my combined mileage was 21.5. We were traveling with some MGT cars so our speed was about 60 to 65 mph. This was the first semi long trip in my 64 BJ8 since I restored it last year. My in town driving seems to be about 16 mpg. Have a good day!
Hey Doug,
I have checked with the AHCUSA and no problem adding the attached file as it is not copyrighted. It is a Tune Up
article that appeared in 1988 and still very valid today.
Covers more than just the carbs. Thanks to Rick Regan
who wrote it in 1988. Hope this is helpful. Also hope I attached it right !!!
Regards,
Mike Lewis

after rebuilding my bj7 carbs about five years ago i achieved similar results 16 and 22m.p.g., before the rebuild i just about had to go from gas station to gas station, someone used bits from triumph carbs and who knows what else when they put the carbs together so if i was a little agressive on the gas pedal the cap on #2 carb would come shooting out making a loud "ping" when it hit the underside of the hood, id still like to get a pair of "brass" caps for the dampers.
