Austin FX4 London taxi

The car is a 1967 Austin FX4 London taxi. Does anyone know were I can get more information on the diesel engine that was installed in these cars? I'm going to an auction tomorrow were this car will be sold and would like more information. My fellow member at TDI Club thinks the engine might be a 2.2l perkins.

It should have a BMC 'K' series diesel in it. There is an Austin FX4 website out there that gives all the details.

Welcome! Wish I could impart info for you but not on this car, sorry. If it IS a Perkins, it'd be relatively easy to find bits, tho.

I feel I owe all of you an update. The car sold for $3,100. The floors were completly rusted out and the engine was in need of a rebuild. The winning bidder was a British ex-pat who was very happy.

Dumb question: Can anyone please tell me how to engage reverse in my '67 Austin FX4 London taxi?

I've tried the usual MG stuff - hard to left then forward, or lift up and forward right. but no luck there. Thanks!

Todd - if it's working and hasn't been modified, should be: from neutral, move toward the right, through the (strong) detent spring, then slip down toward you. It's to the right of 4.

Thanks Tom, still no reverse but I'm getting closer with your help.

I went over to my (not running) diesel FX4, and was able to find reverse using your tips, and lifting up on the shifter to unlock the detent.
However, when i tried it on the gas FX4, with much coaxing I was finally able to lift up on the shifter, but still cant get past the detent to engage reverse.

Any idea what to check for (something broken?) or what to try next?

Hi Todd - first thing I'd do would be to call Kip Motor Co. in Dallas.

They've helped me with tech suggestions for many years.

Seems like you may have a broken spring - or broken detent - inside that gearbox.
