GT6 Red GT6

Hello all,
I think I read some comments on a forum about red paint. I am interested in painting my GT6 red at some point in the coming year. Somewhere I came across this picture of a red GT6. I have found this particular color to be appealing for some reason. I realize my computer monitor may mislead me some but still think this may be the color for me. I'm hoping this car pic will be recognized and that someone will clue me in in the paint (color type, etc.) I also recall some remarks about some effects from primer color and also color fade which I would surely like to avoid as much as possible.
Thanks so much,
Jim

Hey look at the pics of my GT6 in the members pictures, the red I used was a Jaguar red. The original color was "signal 32" red. Actually look to the left at my avitar, thats my hood, and the red I used.

No question the GT6 looks good in red. I wouldn't let the anti-red talk put you off as (I think) that is mainly a reaction to the over-use of that color on TR3s.

On the wall in the garage I've got a panoramic photo from a TRA gathering where 20 out of 45 TR3s were red (including mine). This was back when they still thought TR4s were used cars so it was side-curtains only and lots of rojo.

Jim,

There was a beautiful GT6 that joined us this year at the 6-PACK TRials. They look great in red IMO.

I have a Pimento red 1970 gt6. Probably gonna repaint it signal 32 red for the nostalgic factor.

Now that's "<span style="color: #FF0000">Pull me over</span>" red

I painted my original Pimento red TR6 with 40th anniversary Corvette red. This red has very little black in the formula and really pops. The down side is red pigment is very expensive so be prepared to pay more for any red finish.

Oh please. The starfire dye in my paint is insane! Just a quart of Mazdas Aurora Blue cost $200. Imagine what a gallon would cost! Not to mention the cost of reducers and clear...

...sure looks purdy though.

Red paint for my mustang is nothing. A gallon costs less than a quart of this stuff. :frown:

How much black pigment is in the Mustang red paint? For a bright red it WILL be very expensive. I used base / clear on the undeside, inside, and top side of my TR6. The red base, clear, reducer, and hardner was approximately $2,000 discounted in 1995. That price did not include abrasives and polishes...

Thanks everyone. The more I see these GT6 pics the more I think the red is the way I want to go. At this point I'm thinking it (my '72 GT6 MK3) will be the Signal Red with a white primer. I do hope the paint doesn't cost me anywhere near $2000 though.
Oh well...
Thanks,
Jim

I honestly dont know. Everytime Ive bought paint for everything else but my GT6 they just mix it and dont print off a mixture sheet. When I was researching colors for my triumph however they printed off several because I was also interested in a Ford Sonic Blue. Apparently a gallon of Aurora is about $500 and a gallon of Sonic Blue is $600 (not including clear or reducer)

My mustang is rio red, but I always have them make a special mixture matched to my fuel door. Its about $100-200 a gallon depending on what the current year is. However I had one body shop mix me a nice touch up bottle for free, and another quart for free. Unfortunately I think the quart was laser red. (offered same year same model but code is e9 instead or e8). I was using it as touch up (with a brush) so I caught the mistake quickly. Good thing I didnt spray it. The reds so cheap that I can go down to ANY auto part store and pick up a paint pen and a rattle can for little to nothing.

When I planned on painting my BMW, I looked to see how much Zinnoberrot would cost. The english translation is "vermillion" though Vermillion is what they call e8 for 93 mustangs but looks slightly darker than my mustang (and the paint chip looked even more darker (I took it outside in sunlight to check) I guess thats why many BMW enthusiasts call it "cinnabar Red" instead. ...Anyway, a gallon of that was going to cost over $200. I thought that was expensive at the time, and figured that Id just paint it with the Rio Red I have. Its not like Id find another to compare its color to, and if so, the paint would be 20+yo anyway, so even the real color probably wouldnt match.

Note: all my cheap reds are Omni.

May I also ask advice on how or where paint color match such as Signal Red or Pimento Red may be purchased in USA? Also, I see various types of paint on the market (acrylic enamel/laquer, urethane, etc.) Are there any feelings about these - ease of use, performance, etc.?
Thanks...

Hey jsfbond...

Again how do you want the paint to perform. A daily driver that gets dirty and scratched, an Acrylic Enamel would be okay dokay. On mine, I don't want to <span style="text-decoration: underline">see</span> any fade or scratches for a while so I went base/clear. But I work in the industry and the Dupont rep. cut me a deal on the color if I also bought the clear he suggested. One of my delivery drivers had his own bodyshop for years, and I picked his brains alot before I started the body work.

Hey you guys! Has anyone else noticed a big difference in lifting/opening of the hood on a 1970 and prior, vrs. the 1971 and up? I thought it was not cantalevered/balanced the same... Could be some predjudice on my part though.

This car won't be used except for fun on nice days. It will be garaged. A paint that will look great and stands up and doesn't fade quickly is desired.
Thanks
