Wiring harness and fuel line routing

Am i right in thinking that the wiring harness and fuel line runs down the main left hand rail and are both secured with "P" clips, are they both secured on the inner side of the rail and not the bottom ?
Or is the fuel line held with the same spring clips as the brake line.
Can anyone help, a photo would be good.

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

Welcome Rob to the best British Car Forum there is. From your profile I gather you're working on a BJ7 model. I too am restoring a BJ7 so maybe I can be of some help. The Battery cable is routed on the right side and is secured by P clips (secured to the bottom of the frame). The fuel line also is routed on the right side and secured with P clips and fastened so that the fuel line was above the bottom of the rail. (page 144, Authentic Resto guide, Gary Anderson and Roger Moment authors). The brake line also ran down the right side and was secured with "hairpin" fasteners. The chassis wiring harness ran down the left side. The clips were arranged so that the loop held the wiring up between the main frame rail, (page 149, same book). I highly reccommend you purchase this book as it is a great reference.
Hope this helps.

I'm still scratching my head over this routing problem.
Just so I'm clear do you mean the right hand side as you sit in the car (and not looking from the front).

Don't suppose you have a picture.

Yep Chicken "as you set in the car". Johnny a bit late today. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif---Keoke

Rob, Here's a link to a picture on a BJ7 restoration

routing

You can see the harness on the left (with a plastic sleeve for protection) and on the right the battery cable, fuel line and brake line. It appears this owner has changed some P clips to custom clips but the overall routing looks right.

And here's the home page for this restoration if you are looking for more pictures:

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

Thanks John (again)

Looking at the picture the battery cable is held with P clips screwed from underneath the main rail, the brake line with the hair clips and the fuel line held with the P clips but are these screwed on the inside of the lefthand main rail with the "P" of the clamp pointing up or down.

Regards

John

Just had a closer look at the picture and the battery and fuel line look like they are held with the same P clip, a sort of double P if that makes sense, held from underneath !

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

Hi Rob,

The P clips that go along the edge of the frame rail for the harness and fuel line have the P facing up. After it is installed you can push on the clip to bend it up slightly above the bottom of the rail. There are two places where the battery cable and fuel line share the same P clip mounting screw. Two P clips are used, oriented 180 degrees from each other. These are two most rearward mounting holes before the fuel line and battery cable turn upward at the rear end tunnel. The mount holes for these 'double clips' are on the X brace structure and the small connector piece between the X structure and side rails. The battery cable continues forward to another P clip on the forward connector piece before it jumps across to the vertical side of the rail on it's way up to the starter button. I know this would be easier to follow with a picture or sketch. It might take me a few days before I have the time to put something together so check in later.

Cheers,
John

Ooops, sorry I'm late. After reading and posting your reply I realized I have it wrong myself! So I'm now re-doing ( I hate that word) the clips. John Loftus could better give a description. And yes, I meant the passenger side on a LH drive car is the Right side.

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

Rob,

I took some pictures from under my BJ7. Since it is only on jack stands the space is limited and had to take multiple pictures but I hope it covers what you are looking for. I believe this mounting to be correct for my car based on the marks and bends of the original parts and the available mounting holes.

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

John - your car is looking good, man, looking good.
Are you coming east to Conclave this summer?

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

Hi Peter,

Just recovering from Christmas/New Year hangovers/jetlag and you're asking about Conclave? I guess the first order of business is to tighen a few more bolts and paint a few more parts here and there. Then do a shake down run of at least 500 miles. Give me a few more months and I'll let you know! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif Whew, those are beautiful photo's, thanks for sharing. Now I'm off to the garage to re-do mine. You're car is really gorgeous.
BTW thanks for all the help in the past.

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

Cheers John

Now i can get on over the weekend and hopefully come out of my shed at the end of it with a sense of achievement and not with a handfull of hair !!!!!

Many thanks

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

John

I finially got round to putting my wiring harness/fuel line/battery cable in along the chasis rails, just a couple of quiries if i may:

I have a BJ7 and mounted the fuel pump on the right of the rear bulkhead (as you sit in the car,so there's no mistake) i have the fuel line then coming up to it from the chasis rail but how is the fuel line from the pump to the fuel tank routed, does it pass through a grommett in the center of the rear bulkhead and into the tank, how is it supported over the axle ?
The same really applies to the battery cable, does this again pass over the axle, but where is it supported.

Your help or anyone who can shed some light on this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Rob

Re: Wiring harness and fuel line

Hi Rob,

The fuel line from the tank goes through a special grommet (moss has them) on the boot bulkhead and then turns up and goes between the two seat pans. If you look around under the sheet metal directly between the seat pan openings you should find a spot welded tab used to hold the line in this area (just bend it around the line). The fuel line then goes to the fuel pump bulkhead, makes a right turn and goes through a P clip. The fuel line continues above the fuel pump mounting bracket then makes a large 180 degree loop to align with the fuel pump inlet.

The battery cable comes out of the second metal/rubber grommet in the boot bulkhead and goes though a P clip mounted on the inboard side of the bump box (in the same way the wiring harness going to the boot is P clipped to the left side bump box). It then goes forward and gets P clipped to the fuel pump bulkhead as it crosses above the fuel pump and then goes down by the drive shaft tunnel.

Cheers,
John
