Trying to Find a Family Heirloom

Apbos,

Thanks very much for the lead. I'll call him tomorrow and see what happens.

I'll let you know...

Thanks again,

mike

Would the sales records be an IRS issue which may mean they are on record somewhere? And being sold through a dealer, would there be DMV records somewhere? I can call my "people" if Geo's "people" come up empty.

Thanks Silverghost,

I called this morning and left a message at the office of the lead Apbos sent last night but have nothing new there to report till I hear back from him.

As for searching DMV records, I tried that two days ago via the site referenced by one of the other members, https://govdmvrecords.com/Default.aspx?SearchBy=2. Nothing came up on it using any of the numbers from Dad's car.

But I don't know how thorough the site's search was, since I tried a people search as a test with the newly-known information on Linton Bowman and it didn't turn up anything there either.

Do you know if DMV records are public domain? If so can I simply go to my local county couthouse and ask for a search?

If your "people" do this kind of thing for a living I would be happy to hire them if this kind of information is unavailable to someone like me.

Thanks again,

mike

Mike-

This is a neat story and I hope it works out for you - I did check the Houston club's roster of commission numbers and there are no leads there. You might get lucky with the DMV, but my worry is the date of sale is in the timeframe where Texas didn't retain records (late 70's sometime) - I remember this vaguely when I was in pursuit of a missing title. Might not have that right as it may pertain only to computer records but if you call the Austin DMV office I think you can reach someone who can give you better information.

Randy

TR4nut,

Thanks very much for checking down there. I'll try information now or Google to get a number for DMV in Austin. I'll let you know what I find out.

mike

Here's the latest.

I thought I had covered the Texas DMV base from the website search I did with https://govdmvrecords.com/Default.aspx?SearchBy=2. But this is a private company site and may not have access to all the information actually available.

I called Austin, Texas inforamtion and got the number for Vehicle Titles and Registration. If anyone needs it it's 512-837-4416. From there I was referred to their website at www.txdot.gov to print form VTR 275 (Request for Texas Motor Vehicle Information. I'll fill that out and get it sent in to them asap.

I also used the website to submit an online request for information under the Open Records Act.

We'll see what comes from these.

mike

What a cool thread - best of luck Mike - I think it's a great search...like National Treasure 3 or something, but even better cuz it's without Nicholas Cage! - wish there was something I could help you with. This does make me feel guilty and will likely cause me to register my 6!

Thanks,

Update: I just got of the phone with Robert Guest who I was hoping was related to Bob Guest (the second owner after Dad). No such luck.

Form VTR275 heads out tomorrow to Austin to request a title search. Unfortunately the back of the form is quite clear as to permitted uses to divuldge such information and I had to initial one of the many qualifiers. While my quest doesn't exactly fall into any of the state's categories, I selected the one I thought most closely fit. We'll see if they honor my request or arrest me for falsifying government documents!

I'm still stymied as to how to get an unlisted phone number for the man named Bob Guest that lives in Sterrett, Texas. According to the man that bought the car from Dad, he's the next link in the chain (assuming it's in fact the same Bob Guest).

I'm contemplating hiring an investigator to see if he can access the number, or go down there myself and find a phonebook. Maybe another Guest in town will be related and direct me to the right person. I tried to find that town's phone directory online, with no success.

mike

I've no success with the name 'Guest' in Sterrett Texas -- possibly because it is such a small place and apparently has no zip code of its own making a resident there have a mailing address of Red Oak or possibly Waxahachie (and likely why you found no phone directory online).

There are quite a few 'Guests' in those nearby communities -- calling each would be tedious but might get a contact. There was one possible among those listed in those towns (less than 2 miles north of Sterrett):

[<span style="color: #CC0000">Personal ifo has been PM'd to Mike -- Basil</span>]

The site 'Lookupanyone' shows him related to:
Austin Guest
Larine Guest
Corbett Guest
Martha Guest

The nearest (8 mi north of Sterrett) Robert or Bob Guest I could come up with was:

[<span style="color: #CC0000">Personal info has been PMd to Mike</span>]
Probably too young though his age may make him about right to be the son of the Robert Guest you seek.

I realize there is a lack of phone numbers on these -- may be shoe leather time. Hope you have a friendly innocent face.

Something more perhaps:

From Ellis County Tax records, real estate owned by Bobby G Guest (of course these could be rentals, empty lots or perhaps his residence) but the listings also offer a couple of street addresses where tax bills are sent:

https://actweb.acttax.com/act_webdev/ellis/showdetail2.jsp?can=170561&ownerno=0

https://actweb.acttax.com/act_webdev/ellis/showdetail2.jsp?can=229678&ownerno=0

Also -- among the Guest relatives listed in my prior message, both Austin and Corbett are about the right age for the 2nd generation (around 40) and both have the same middle initial (G) as Bob/Bobby Glenn Guest. Couldn't find a phone for either but the same property tax list shows addresses for both:

https://actweb.acttax.com/act_webdev/ellis/showdetail2.jsp?can=227941&ownerno=0
https://actweb.acttax.com/act_webdev/ellis/showdetail2.jsp?can=228770&ownerno=0
https://actweb.acttax.com/act_webdev/ellis/showdetail2.jsp?can=225071&ownerno=0

'Good Luck Jim'... er, I mean Mike

Great Work Heo Hahn! Thanks very much.

Are you referring to Jim Phelps from Mission Impossible fame, or Jim West from Wild Wild West, or possibly even Jim Rockford from the Rockford Files. In any case, great shows all.

I'll make phone calls to any I can and send of a letter to all the addresses you found. And if those don't work, I'll move to the shoe leather (though I can't say much for my face!)

Thanks again so much. I hope I never do anything that cause me to have to go "on the lamb" and have you come after me!

mike

Or the OTHER famous Jim....Tiberius Kirk?

I can't believe I missed that one! That's what Dr. McCoy (aka Bones) always said before Captain Kirk stepped into the transporter.

It's funny you referenced that, because my son and I are planning on seeing the new Star Trek this weekend.

mike

Folks,
I have removed some of the information in a few posts that contained personal information (addresses, phone numbers, etc), but have PM'd Mike with all that information. I appreciated what everyone is trying to do to help, Mike. However, maybe I'm just being paranoid, or overly cautious in my old age, but I'm just not comfortable with having other people's personal information posted in the open forum without their knowledge or permission (yes, I know the same information is searchable on certain sites).

Please keep the discussion going, but if you come up with any specific addresses or phone numbers, please PM that kind of info to Mike rather than posting it.

Thanks.

Do you have an update on this. I haven't see anything in week and enjoyed the story that was unfolding.

Thanks for asking. I have no new news yet. Last week I sent off a request to the State of Texas DOT for a title search.

And I also wrote letters to the possible family members/descendants that I could not find phone numbers for.

Lastly, my brother knows some folks in the police and he's trying to see if they can help.

I'm not giving up yet and will keep everyone posted on the progress.

Thanks again,

mike

Hey while you guys are doing these wild searches, would ya mind popping in some stuff I have on my signature? I've been trying for months and have been spun around in circles.

The answer may be yes, but I don't understand the question. Pmail me if necessary or else start a new thread if appropriate.
