TR4/4A TR4 Article in "Automobile" magazine

Picked up a May edition of "Automobile" magazine yesterday (I don't usually read this mag, but US Airways had them on their free magazine stands for the Boston/DC Shuttle flights). This appears to be a mag devoted to the latest sportier cars on the market.

Anyway imagine my suprise when I find a two-page article twords the back on the Triumph TR4! Has a couple of old ad pictures, and describes it as "Italian style, limey grunt", "TR4 makes an intresting alternative to an MGB" and states "no wonder values continue to rise steadly", "profesionally restored TR4s are valued around $23,000".

Seems we're no longer going unnoticed! Not sure if that's a good thing or not though.

In the old days some of the auto mags featured old cars for their classic characteristics, good value, good deals, or interesting features. It seems rare that the Mags do that these days. I hope this becomes a trend!

Hi,

Looking for a good read?

There are some good Triumph-specific magazines, but for more general auto coverage I highly recommend Hemming's "Sports & Exotic Cars" magazine. It's devoted to cars from the days when they were built by people rather than robots and has had several great articles about various Triumphs. I enjoy seeing details about other marques, along with some of the restoration project stories.

For racing, it's hard to beat Grassroots Motorsports.

I'm a religious reader of Classic and Sports Car for just the same reason, though I must admit -- and no offense is meant for our UK brethern -- I can only understand half of what is written, since it is in the Queen's English and not the version spoken on this side of the pond. Truly emphasizes that we are two people separated by a common language! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Agreed - C&SC is the best "old car" mag out there IMHO. And it covers the whole gamit - from Morris 1100s to Ferrari Tesarossas. And the photography is teriffic.

Hmmm....no one as yet has mentioned _Triumph World_ magazine? I had the complete run from #1 through #57 but then let my subscription lapse. Odds are I'll renew at some point and try to get the back issues I've missed; at the same time, I find I don't much miss it.

But back to the topic at hand: it's so nice to see the "Michelotti" TRs finally get the recognition they've deserved all along. (Kinda like the way Heralds and Sports 6/Vitesse models are finally being acknowledged!) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

$23,000, you've got to be kidding. I am from a TR family where my father still owns a TR3B from long ago and a more recent purchase TR7. I remember the day in the early 1980's when he brought home a 4A, we all thought it was cool because of the roll up windows. However I remember the day about 10 years ago that he sold his TR4A and TR6 for 1250 bucks each. Both cars were in average shape. Oh well, at least he still has the 3B. I'll tell him to keep holding on to it!!!

Hi Andy,

Whatever you do, DON'T show him this posting here on BCF or let him see the auction itself.

I've seen some very nice TR4s sell in the $20-25K range (maybe a little more in England), but this price was so far out in la-la land I didn't believe it. Surely it was a typo! So I had an email converstion with someone at Barrett-Jackson to confirm the selling price. They said, yes, it's accurate (final total includes their share, which is added on top of the winning bid amount) and they weren't aware of any special historical value to this particular car, just said it's a very nice restoration (although several of us here have noted a few incorrect items).

Crazy! Heck, it got me thinking about going full time into the LBC restoration and auction business. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Met a nice bloke at our last car show that paid in the high twenties for a frame-off TR6. He was happy, I was silently critical. But in reality I was ecstatic because the price is going up. Not good if you are in the market, I guess. It breaks my heart to hear about "parts cars" out there, but at least they aren't being crushed. Indeed, good rebuildable Triumphs are still out there, one just has to be diligent. It is interesting to see that restored Big Healeys are still demanding 65+K. The Big Triumph is starting to climb. I can forsee within the next five years that a well restored TR6 will demand $30,000 routinely.

I believe the car in article belongs to Jaime Kittman, who works/writes for Automobile Magazine.
At least he drives his cars. He's also a lawyer.
Isn't that kind of an immoral oxymoron -British Car owning lawyer?
