Pedal Box - Reassembly - Any issue with adding a spacer in the middle of the pedals

I had some time this afternoon and I am reassembling my pedal box. There is a little bit of slop in the pedals and I thought about adding a washer in the middle to help stabilize and reduce movement on the pedal shaft. And it does reduce a certain amount of side to side slop. Yes I could drill out the pedals bolt holes by a very slight amount and fit a microfinish bolt. I did this once before on Bugsy I and I'm not certain I drilled the bearing surface squarely. And I even have one of those bolts around here. I'll leave that for another time.

Anyway as it stands now the washed does not move freely and is perhaps a bit crooked. I'm taking it back apart to grind an edge flat on the washer so it can rotate and move as needed. Pedals move freely returning to rest even before I add the return springs. Next steps is adding the pedal stop bolts. IS there a procedure on how the Pedal Stop Bolts are adjusted. As I look at the BMC Shop Manual it calls for a Distance spacer between the pedals. Guessing that means a washer. Anyone know how thick?

Just did this Jim and the washer/distance piece went flying. I tore apart a junk pedal assembly for a replacement and would put it at about 1/8" thick. Maybe 3/16".

Kurt.

Thanks Kurt,
i ground the side of the washer down so it is now D Shaped and put back in place. There was no washer in place previously. Polished up the bearing surface, some grease and assembly works fine. Ran out of time to finish last night but about 15 m to connnect brake lines and finish tidying up yet left to do.

Radiator to install and then to get to get the differential pulled and then out in the driveway for degreasing and pressure washing. Brajes, bushings, wheel bearings, spring rehab and paint. New gas tank going in and then reinstall of dif with new 3.9 pumpkin. Need to order tires for my new wheels and get them mounted and install the front tilt kit. Or that may wait as I want to go drive to enjoy new suspension, disk brakes, new shock and stop fixing and enjoy driving.

Jim,
Get a bronze washer and I used a lock nut to get the space right...made it smooth as budda!
Rut

Pretty smooth now Rut. But easy enough to find a bronze washer and swap. Good progress today with MC install finished. Radiator reinstalled, old gas tank drained, no wonder Bugsy had issues running last Fall, only about 3/4 of a gallon was in there, did see some rust specks in the gas when I drained. Not much but definitely there. Glad I bought the new tank. Bugsy got jackstands repositioned and he is ready for the differential to come out. Tomorrow afternoons task after Church and Brunch. Take care. Happy Easter.
