not stumped yet .. but

Maybe you have a detent where a ball should be? Or, vice-versa?
Spring too long?

it might seem that way, but i had two other detent plugs/springs/balls. one of them was an early version that used a plug not a ball. side by side, they were all the same height.
.
when i get home, i am going to check the reverse plunger itself. maybe ... just maybe its spun 180 degrees out.
.
what i see right now is this. if i look into the reverse selector detent plug hole at the vertical plunger i can see a slotted notch that the ball sits against. when the plug is installed, the ball sits into this notch and prevents easy movement of the plunger. i believe that the ball is so tight against the notch that i can't compress the ball and spring using the shifter. if i remove some of the pressure, the ball can be pushed out and the shifter works fine. there is a small pin that aligns the plunger so it's hard to believe the plunger is installed 180 degres out. i will check it anyway to make sure.
.
i did consider modifying the spring but after seeing 2 other plug configurations the same, i am sure there is something wrong.

if i can't figure it out tonight, i will post some pictures on my website so that all can see what i'm looking at.

okay boys shut this thread down! the plunger was 180 deg out. the locator pin rides in a slot on the plunger and only had a dent. turn it around and all is well! whew! now i can move forward ( a good direction on projects like these)! thanks for all your help and back up. now some clean up and gasket work, a little paint, and a pic or 2 for the site!
.
whooh!

Right on!! I thought it would be something like that! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Way to go Fred! Always nice to hear about a problem solved. Especially one that didn't require any more money to be spent.

Great Fred, that had me puzzeled here all day.

It has been so long since I had taken one apart.
