Mr. Gasket Fuel Pumps

Anyone got experience with Mr. Gasket Fuel Pumps - 2-3.5 Low PSI for a Spridget. Good, Bad, Indifferent.

I added a fuel filter before carbs this evening and after I retightened the clamps a second time, no ticking heard from the rear of the car. Hmmmmm. I think I might be in the market for a new pump this evening. O'reilly's has one in stock locally.

LOOSEN THE CLAMP ON THE FILTER AND BURP THE FUEL LINE. MAY BE AIR BLOCKED.

I'm seeing air bubbles coming into the filter from the pump. All appears tight and does not appear to be leaking on the suction side. Assumption is bad diaphram on the pump. Can I get a consensus here?

Maybe.
Assume SU pump. Is it ticking? 1st post said no, last post seems to indicate that it is.
Will the pump move fuel through unrestricted line?
Is the filter directional?
Have you checked pressure with a guage. If little or no pressure, bad diaphram. Or collasped rubber hose. Or trash at the tank pick up. Might try reverse flush of fuel line.

If you have pressure, air lock.

Remove new filter and see if it returns to the way it was.

Anyone else have an idea.

Jim

Well I now remember a previous comment re. a Mr. Gasket fuel pump. Boy is it loud. I bought some rubber grommets this AM and will attempt to isolate the pump from the bulkhead on RR Side. Boy is that sucker ever noisy, noisy, noisy. Hopefully isolation will help quiet it down.

The aftermarket I put on a few months back has a plastic body to it, which helped cut some of the noise. I think it's a Mr. Gasket low pressure unit. It's not too bad on noise. The last square body pump I put on sounded like a machine gun.

Jim,

This one is really loud compared to the ? brand of pump that was back there. When I added a clear filter in front of the carbs, I could see that the old pump was at times not pumping gas but pumping air as indicated by bubbles in the filter. I'm hopeing some rubber grommets will isolate the pump more and decrease noise. Issue is not enough room for grommets on captive bolt back there. Hardware store does not have a 1/4-28 coupler so I can extend the captive bolt and make the fuel pump stand further away from the bulkhead. Gonna see if I can make one with 3 1/4-28 nuts and the welder this afternoon.

Don't know if you've checked but there could be a break in the line between the pump and filter, or between the tank and the pump. You could take the pump physically off the car and leave the electrical connections on. Put a hose on the inlet and outlet side and see if you see air bubbles. If so, then something's failed inside the pump.

Why not just disconnect the fuel line near the carbs, hold it over a jar, turn on the pump, and see if it is pumping fuel?

I found that aftermarket fuel filters don't work well with these low-pressure, low-flow systems that we have in our cars. a description of my experience are at https://www.nonlintec.com/sprite/fuel/. Bubbles in the fuel are actually to be expected as it heats up; doesn't mean there is air in it. It's literally boiling.

I don't have much experience with the Mr Gasket pump, but just from the size and descriptions of the way it behaves, I'll bet it's a lot like the Facet, which I do have. The Facet also has a reputation for being noisy, but as long as you don't get a vapor bubble in the pump, it's reasonably quiet. So, the noisiness MIGHT be a sign that you have vapor problems similar to those I had. Lack of noise doesn't necessarily mean it's dead. Might, though. If it really has stopped pumping, check to see if you have voltage at the pump before ditching it.

Thanks Steve, I added a second mounting bolt back on the bulkhead to get the pump to mount with gas coming in the bottom and hose coming out the top to the hard line. Looks great unfortunately instructions say pump works best pushing gas not pulling. Not sure if orientation is going to work properly. I can't turn it over as fuel filter hits/fuel hose rubs against bottom of the car. Looking for a 90 degree angle adapter for the filter to see if I can resolve issue. Didn't have time to finish installation last night, too many honey-do's to finish. More work on it later tonight. I'll try to see if it works in the orientation I originally had planned rather than the 45 degree install old pump had.
