MGB MG Watch, Anyone?

Normally, I don't pass along promotions, but this is something special, and I've checked with Basil, who said to go ahead with it.

Michael Caputo, who owns a company that markets apparel and accessories, has come up with a neat watch and a great idea to honor one of the designers of the MGB on his 90th birthday. Here's the scoop from Michael:

Back in the 50's Don Hayter played a major part in designing the MGB, a car
we either loved at first sight or, like me, came to love later in our lives.

Don is 90 now.

The MG Car Club celebrated one of the leading men behind the MGB sports car,
Mr. Don Hayter, ahead of his 90th birthday this Sunday, January 24.
At the
reception that included his family, former colleagues, and various invited guests,
the Club presented Don with a framed collection of photos taken down the years.
Don said: “The important thing about life is the people in it. Seeing old people
from my department has made my day, and without the MG Car Club this
wouldn’t have happened. For that I say thank you.”

In honor of his 90th year wouldn't you like to send him something special?
I talked with his son who said:
"That would be amazing if you were able to organise (sending him a watch),
as he does still wear watches. I would be happy to pay - just let me know?"
Well I can't make him pay for a watch when Don doesn't get paid for all the
happiness MGs bring me! My next thought was that if 50 of us chipped in
$10 we could send a nice watch. But then I would want one like his, and so
would the other guys. Of course, knowing how I do things... if 150 guys wanted
the same watch... So... I started looking, and I found something.

Now, in order to be able to send him a watch, and to spread the joy of doing so,
I need to find homes for 142 additional watches just like his. 142 because he gets

one, I want one, that leaves 142 in the absolute final manufacturing run of 144
watches. This movement has never featured the MG logo, and after this run the
movement will never be manufactured again.

This watch, like the MG, is mechanical. No electronic computers,
no quartz timing. Unlike the MG the watch is self winding. As long as the wearer
remains active the watch will keep running!

I would like to get his watch to him asap so the order window is rather short.
From now, until 9 AM February 8, you can use this
(LINK) to order this
fully mechanical, self winding MG watch for only $145, including postage,
to anywhere in the world:

Now about that watch, as I mentioned only 144 of these watches will be made.
They will be a numbered in a limited edition. The first in the series, #1 of 144,
will go to Mr. Don Hayter.
Along with his watch will be a card naming you and your
city of residence, identifying you as a giftor.

It is a very special watch.
The watch features a single minute hand with three sub dials. The first sub-dial is for
seconds, the next shows 12-hour time and the third displays 24 hour time. Around the bezel
is a Tachymeter graduated for MPH. Though shown here with a black strap, our MG
production run will feature a brown leather strap with contrasting stitching. The watch is a high
quality automatic mechanism with a 40mm 'exhibition back' case rated at 100 meters.

The watch carries a lifetime guarantee from Bonica Time. Not that you'll need it, this
self-winding movement has been around for more than ten years, there has never been a return
for manufacturing defect. Bonica Time will retire the design, and the automatic mechanism, after
producing this limited edition, numbered, MG watch, for Mr Hayter. No one will ever be able to buy another like it.
Orders at $145 are pre-manufacture, the watch will ship at the end of February 2016.
Order today to guarantee your own.

Shown below is the watch prototype with the brown leather strap.

Feel free to ask anything about this watch, but don't delay ordering, as of this email only 127 are available.

Got mine on order for my birthday present! (And no, I'm not 90.)

Mickey - none of the pictures are loading for me.

though the link does work - and the pic is there

thanks Mickey - lovely watch! and even lovelier gift!

Done and done.

Done and done.

Good deal, Harry.

I've been thinking for a while about wearing a watch again; haven't done so in years. And this seems like such a great opportunity to get a watch that isn't battery operated AND to honor one of the "dads" of the MGB while he's still around.

By the way, I'll be traveling to England later in the year. First time there. Will be posting more about that later and looking for input about must-see places and people to hook up with.

Very interesting timepiece.

Funny, I've never NOT worn a watch. Feel sorta half dressed without one.

Ol' Blighty!?!? Take a camera!

Yep - will be shooting lots of photos. This trip won't be just England. More later...

FYI. I just ordered this watch and some lucky BFC MG owner is going to win it! Stay tuned for details.

Mickey,
I was lucky enough to spend 3 weeks in England back in 2005. Had a wonderful time, and would go back in a North Carolina minute if I could. And lots of pictures is a great idea - I did until all the digital storage of the camera was used up. Got tons of photos in museums.

One thing I recommend. My granddaughter made me promise to keep a journal every day, so every night I would sit down and write down the day's activities. When I got back home, those notes allowed me to document the trip. Every so often I get it out and read it again - brings back great memories.

Thanks, Harry. We're really looking forward to this. Never been a journal type, but may have to make the effort this time.

Update from the vendor:

I just got a sample watch via Fed ex today. Exhibition case is very cool. The second hand moves smoothly and the profile is unique. Hand winding is pointless, move the watch a little and it is running. Very nice. The sub-dials are different from any i have seen but reading the time took about 3 seconds to figure out and is second nature now.

I love that I will have the same watch Don Hayter will have.

Looking forward to getting mine. Glad to hear that getting accustomed to the unusual dial is no problem.

And just to spur a bit more interest, here's a video of a sample (before logo applied):
