Hey Mr. Mace

Yikes! I always panic whenever someone addresses me as "Mr. Mace"; it's like when you were a child and your mother or father used that loud, stern tone to call you by all of your names! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Since you asked, here's my take. From what I can see in the pictures, it's likely a pretty good Herald. I know for a fact that it is quite recently restored, since it was only this spring that the owner sent me a picture of it in mid-assembly!

I'll also be very honest and note that the paint and upholstery choices are not ones I would make, since I'm rather more a purist / originality freak (within limits)! But again, that work appears to be very well done.

I'd prefer not to speculate in such a public forum as to value, but I have had two people e-mail me for advice on this very car....

I like it, my daughter cringes !!
Should buy it to [censored] her off.

Just curious Andy how the herald stacked up with contempories...say the BMW 1600.
Arguably, a better comparison to a BMW would be with the 700; coincidentally, Michelotti styled both!

The Herald really was more the VW Beetle, et. al. class of economy cars. Triumph went for a bit of the "sporting" image with the first series of 948cc Heralds, putting a higher-output, twin-carb engine in the Coupés and Convertibles. It even went so far as to declare those cars elgible for membership in the Triumph Sports Owners Association, while the single-carb 948 sedan had to be content to be lumped in with all the other nonsporting cars in the Standard-Triumph Automobile Association! With the later Herald 1200 models, the focus was rather more on the economy angle.

Ultimately in the US, Heralds were always second-string to the sports cars in the dealerships and never quite got the full support that (I feel) they deserved.
