Got a Crooked Gearshift Lever!

Actually it is crooked on purpose. See attachment. Kind of think it is a TR-4 but don't know. It's rusty, was it originally chromed or painted? The threads are 5/16" X18 and the overall length is 6 3/4" exxclusive of the ball and shifter at the bottom.

Your help would be appreciated, Thanks.

yup, it looks like a TR4 type (the TR25 and TR6 may be the same but I don't know for sure). Yes they were chome.

yes its supposed to be bent like that and it looks like it came from a tr4-6. they came painted as far as i know.

Strong driver?

Don't have one handy to check, but I kind of think the TR4-4A levers were shorter. My guess would be later TR6, as I think early TR6 were chromed and that looks like the remains of black paint to me.

Or might be from a Stag, as they also had that rubber-filled shape above the ball, but ISTR they were a bit longer and chromed. I've got one at home somewhere, so I can check if you want.

Thanks Randall and all. I wanted to identify it because it is an extra and I will be putting it on eBay.
By the way I used my new 32tpi thread file yesterday on the gear shift lever that I brought to be replated and it worked great!

Thanks, Tinkerman

The shifter on my '76 TR6 is coverd by the boot all the way to the shift knob. When I pull it down it looks to be painted black. I was told the car was original other than wire conversions.

I`d have to have a closer look, but .... it looks real simular to the transfer case shift lever that is on my 73 ford bronco. The one on my Xfer case has the same three flat sided ball lookin affair on the end, and the tapered shaft going up to the pivot ball. The legnth of the whole lever apears to be about the same too. Then there is the black coating {Paint}. the Xfer case shift lever on the Bronco is exactly that, black. And the threads are 5/16 - 18 also.
I`m not saying it is a Bronco xfer case shift lever, but .... it`s REAL close to the same configuration.

On a TR4 lever it's about 5" from the bend to the bottom of the threads.

It's bent so you don't smash your knuckles into the dash support when selecting 1st & 3rd.

TR3 drivers are so tough they don't mind smashing their knuckles once in awhile.

Below is a picture of the 73 TR6 transmission. If you click on it you will see that the shifter is not chromed, but rather has a plastic cover that was shrunk fitted over it.

I have the gearchange mechanism out of my 250 sitting on the bench. It is chromed.
