TR2/3/3A Door capping—batting needed?

Hi all,
I'm reupholstering the door capping now, and am not happy with the look. When I glued on the new leather, I can see the outline of the rubber padding. So I’m wondering if I should add a strip of thin batting or wool flannel to prevent this. The attached mfr picture is not mine, but definitely shows the issue. I don’t recall seeing that on the original, although it did have 50 years worth of elbows to settle in!

My original door caps had a thin layer of batting under the leather.

The original was cotton batting, and can be found at most sewing stores. I use JoAnns, but I’m sure hobby lobby would have it too. The batting is layed over the rubber and up to the metal frame, but not overlapping the frame. It prevents the little indent you are worried about in 2 ways. First, it adds filler in that area, which is obvious. Not so obvious, by gluing the batting to the rubber, but NOT gluing the leather to the batting, it allows the leather to “float” flat and straight over the gap. Without the batting, the glue pulls the leather into the gap, adding to the depth of the dent.

I’m cutting the felt to the end of the end cups, and leaving the leather 1/4” longer than the cups, then folding the leather into the cups, and pressing the caps on. Am I missing something ?

Had not got that far so I thought I would ask for some suggestions before I was at the where do we cut this bit stage.
Like painting Upholstery is a new skill I am learning on the job.
