Crypt Car EnduroRun proposed.

I have certainly enjoyed the exploits of everyone's driving season
in the States and abroad, while my TR6 lay dead on jackstands
these past 6 months.. My car is now more or less functional and
it is now the beginning of the old car
driving season in the tropics.

I hope to be able to share some driving exploits, while other's
cars are snow-bound. I am planning an enduro run for the Crypt
Car that puts even my boulder bouncer Wrangler to the test.

An 8 to 10 hour, cross island, mountain back road trail adventure.
Rain forest & palm tree north, across steep, twisty, switchback
after switchback, rugged mountains to the
desert, cactus and sage brush south coast. Then back across the
mountain spine again via 4-lane and home.

The majority of this trip is outside cell phone reach.
I will have to make emergency breakdown repairs, on my own,
with no AAA to rescue my. I'll bring a GPS but w/out cell
phone it is useless.

Here's my planned route- I'll take many photos. Oh Yeah!
Any BCF TR mechanics that wish to attempt this ride are welcome.
The Mrs says "No way. Ain'y gonne be me!"

I am now building my spare parts and roving tool shop.
My all volunteer pit crew met last night at a beach party
to discuss the project.

That's a mighty good looking pit crew!
I'd love to ride "shotgun" on that trip, but it ain't goona happen for me.
Best of luck Dale! My vote is you make it. If so, does that officially rechristen the car "Amos" or mebbe "Lazerus"?

Ben!

I think that might do it for me.

I'll attempt the enduro when I hit 1,000 miles
without a breakdown. I'm at 780 miles now.

If I manage 1000 miles plus the tortuous, 8 hour,
200+ miles, cross mountain run without a major breakdown
.....................................

That ought to begin the Amos era. What do ya think??

I am just really worried about them thrust washers
giving out and blowing an engine in the middle of nowhere..

Dale,

I wouldn't worry about the thrust washers. Just drive it and take a lot of pictures. You'll be fine.

Hi Dale,

Lets see: 8hrs / 200mi.= Approx. 25mph. Is that correct?

It must be one hellish road to be avg. that speed limit!

Pics will be real fun to look at.

Go for it Dale. Wife and I clicked off 170 miles today. Twas 70 in Billings about 60 in the higher elevation. About the last really nice weather we are to have for awhile. Drove to Red Lodge, over to Fishtail for lunch than through Absarokee and Columbus on the way home. Stopped at a quilt shop in Absarokee to keep wife happy. Yes the top was down, heater was on. The winds near the mountains are quite cool.

Yup Russ, the first mountain leg appears
to be about 35 miles as the crow flies. It took me
a little over 4 hours in my Jeep. 4 hours of continuous switchbacks.
My neck will ache for days after the run.

The views are stunning; the lack of guardrails is scary.
I'm building my traveling, breakdown repair shop.

Leaving soon for some tarpon fishing.

I am ticked off to no end.

Arrived at the marina at 7:00 AM only to find some
ignorant fool had put his no engine, totally gutted,
boat hulk, on concrete blocks right in front of my
assigned spot.

I spent three hours using various jacks and other blocks
to slowly shift this hulk enough for me to gain access
to my own boat.

Guess what? The marina took out my battery just prior
to the hurricane and has not reinstalled it. I am home
to grab Crypty's brand new battery and put it in my boat.

Blargh!!

Dale;

When is this victory run going to happen?
I do know people in Canada who do crazy things, like fly to far off islands for no real reason at all.

It would love to see the final demise of C----!!!!! and the awakening of Amos!!!!!

Take lots of pictures cause I want to see a good end to this story.

Maybe the 2nd week in Nov or the last week in Nov.
Perhaps 50% of the Enduro will be in 1st and 2nd gear with tremendous
clutch use between gears. I estimate well over 1,000 shifts. I've got
almost 2000 miles on the nearly new clutch. Should I replace it before
the Enduro attempt?

Question: Can a TR6 with a TRF Magic Clutch- installed by a creaking,
old, Canada mechanic withstand this type of use?

Great news- a buddy is into internet video. He and his girlfriend want
to drive behind as chase car and to film cool scenes. The Mrs. wants
in on the chase car part.

This is gonna be fun!!

And way cool- I am trying to acquire some vintage driving goggles
just for fun. Here's the concept I'm trying to purchase for my
co-driver and myself.

The snow is from about 4' that fell in the mountain area, little over a week ago. Lows in the upper 20's, lower 30's.

Hope Dale is able to find out these little cars are great fun to drive and own.

Anytime I see a Miata, S2000, BMW or any of the current crop of open sports cars, I tell my wife they had probably looked for a TR4, couldn't find one and had to settle for second best. She is getting tired of hearing it.

Mark,
the interior mountains of Puerto Rico are rugged
and stunning. It has always been my dream to drive
the Triumph up into the mountains.

After three years of constant breakdowns and continuous
repairs and entire system replacements....................

Maybe this will be my time? My only real concern is
having another rear wheel fall off going thru a tight
switch back turn.

I had that happen in a gentle bend at 40 mph. Scary, yes.
But even scarier seeing how poorly the rear hub is fastened
to the trailing arm. Very few guard rails in the narrow mountain
roads and no shoulders. I throw a wheel and Andy and I might not
survive the plunge off the mountain.
