Chassis Weight

My Healey is now door and wingless, soon to pull the engine.
What is the weight of the bare chassis?
No suspension, interior, body panels or engine?

I don't know, but I was able to lift either end of mine without assistance, and "roll" it over when doing the sand blasting without any help.

I asked the same question when I did my BJ8 and 400 to 450 lbs seemed to be about it by most people. Have a good day!

There's an article at https://www.jule-enterprises.com/id58.html comparing the Jule Enterprises aftermarket chassis with the original Healey chassis; it cites a number of 135 pounds for the original and 215 for the Jule.
I called Martin Jansen of Jule this evening to ask some questions about his Healey rack & pinion conversion, and then asked about weights (this is before reading the referenced article). His memory was that the original chassis was 165 pounds; his chassis is 220 lb, and that his is somewhat less than 500 pounds with all the bulkheads etc. etc. Which suggests that the stock Healey chassis complete with all the bits and pieces is, indeed, about 440 pounds. Now, if it was an original, drove-it-in-the-winter-in-Eastern Canada/NE USA Healey, then I'm sure that the chassis would be a LOT lighter.

Hi guys,

I stuck my bare '58 BN4 chassis on a set of scales a couple months ago and got 405lbs, this included a 20lb front and rear attachment for the rotisiere. So 365lbs for the chassis. This is a solid original chassis with original floors.

Yes, even though I did mine when I was considerably younger, I still was having a hard time thinking I was single-handedly flipping around a 450# chassis.

Three hundred sixty-five pounds (365#), yes, I could do that!

I like to think MOST of my original chassis is still there!!!

I should have some repairs to make, but doesn't look like there's much missing underneath. I hear that I should expect to see some cracks though.

I do recall seeing a photograph of two ladies lifting a complete chassis at one of the factories to illustrate how light the frame is. I've done a quick search and cannot locate the photo.

I do know a bare chassis will fit in the back of a pickup. I also know 4 men can easily lift one on and off said pickup without too much trouble.

I'm convinced (and Happy) that I'll be able to handle this but two ladies??

I either want them in my garage or maybe I'm just afraid to mess with them??

What does the term 'chassis' generally mean in a Healey given that it doesn't easily separate from the bulkheads? Is the whole body, less bolt-on parts the chassis?

I have seen repro chassis pics that look like just the lower box sections, which I'm sure would be easy to move around. With the bulkheads etc that make up the body of a Healey It'd have to be considerably heavier. Guess I'll find out on Tuesday...

I'm not sure what the definition of a Healey chassis is, but this is what weighed in at 365.
