BadBoy mowers

I just sent a message to Badboy Mowers about them not lubricating the threads on their blade bolts when assembling a new mower. They put the bolts in dry at the factory and it doesn't take long for them to rust and seize up. It takes a strong impact to initially break them loose if you're lucky! The new Maverick model I bought, around 8K, the bolts are frozen so bad I have to take the mower to a tractor dealer tomorrow and have them use an impact wrench they use on tractors to break these bolts loose! On the first mower after breaking the bolts loose, I coated the bolts with Anti-seize and never had a problem since. They are great mowers, built to take a lot of abuse, but they are lax about putting bolts in without some type of lube! This is only on the first blade change. So, if you buy a BadBoy mower, take the blades off before using it, and coat the threads with Anti-seize first, then you are good to go from there on! PJ 🤬

I’ve done that on my JD mower since I’ve owned it. You’re right, it makes removing the blades easy.

Took the mower to the dealer this morning and he popped the bolts off with no effort! I only run 90 lbs on my gun and the mechanic told me to jack up the pressure to 135 lbs. It surely makes a difference! (y) Funny that the bolts had zero rust on them, the problem was the factory cranked the bolts in so tight they wouldn't break loose with only 90 lbs of air pressure, and going through an air and water filter, the volume was too slow. They do have now anti-seize on them. Learn something new every day! :thumbsup2:

Here at the hovel, my air pressure for the "windy" wrench is 120lb/psi. Only one has resisted it, front crank/pulley bolt on a Honda Civic.

Thanks, Doc, I have to modify my compressor airline a bit. The main line goes into an air filter/water trap and pressure regulator. I need to install a tap directly out of the tank to another pressure reg. for air tools only. My compressor shuts off at 150 lbs, so plenty of air. :thumbsup2:

Ok, speaking of mowers, Mrs JP and I bought a house today.

Very excited, moving in at the end of the summer. Very excited but at 1.3 acres I will likely need a riding lawnmower. This makes me think that I have the opportunity to get a classic tractor rather than jumping to a ride on mower. I know literally noting about tractors so, is there such a thing as a small tractor that could have a mower deck and an snow blower?

Beautiful home JP! Lovely. (y)

1.3 acres is rather small for a tractor. But if you really want a tractor, and take your time looking for one, you can probably find an old IH Farmall A or B tractor. They are tiny little tractors which are the perfect size for a yard as small as yours. They came with either a gas or kerosene version of the same 113cu in engine that produced just under 20 hp. They were built from the late 30s until right after the war.

I have a diesel JD 332 for my 1/2 acre. I bought it used over 20 years ago and it does the job quite nicely. It has a 50” deck for mowing and a plow. The Onan diesel has been very dependable.

I have a 19hp Sears Craftsman that we bought new in 1995 (28 years) and it's been a faithful mower/ tractor all these years. I've replaced the blades a couple of times, had to replace a couple of the deck pulleys and of course belts one or twice. Last year, for the first time, I rebuilt the carb and just this week I replaced the fuel cap/ gauge because it had become so discolored and blurred that I could no longer read the fuel level. It still has the original tires. If you take care of these things they can last forever.

(The yard belongs to an elderly lady who recently bought the house next door and needed someone to attack extreme over growth in her yard.)

thanks - I expect I will end up with a small one but dream of a larger old one (Farmall) - seems like the small Ford tractors (Jubilee/ 9N aren't suited to a snow blower)

That’s one heck of a mowing job.
As long as you take care of equipment with simple maintenance it will continue to perform. I’ve also done belts and filters along with fluid changes. I got mine in 2000.

I have a 22 year old 15HP Murray lawn tractor that I got used (and actually badly abused). Was owned by family where the kids didn't want to mow the lawn so they continually broke the tractor (looks like they ran over bricks with the mower deck running based on how badly pretzeled the blades were, and the blade carrier bearings were toast as well). Got it for free with a mostly totalled mower deck, spent a couple hundred on new blades, carrier bearings and belts and its perfectly servicable on my 1.2 acre lot. Don't have need for a snowblower here. Not as cool as a classic farm tractor but a useful tool. Was $1000 in 2001 when originally purchased, similar units sell at the big box now for $1500-$2000 depending on brand.

Nice house!! (Sorry I can’t help in the tractor issue… my 22” Toro probably is not what you have in mind!)

Congrats to you and the Mrs. Lovely home.

How did I miss this? Congratulations. May you have many happy years in your new abode!
