MGB '77 MGB runs for a bit, then shuts down

Another part of the mystery is solved...discovered yesterday while trying to set the total advance at 32 degrees at 4000 rpm, the mechanical advance is locked up. Will try to fix that today, runs great at lower rpm's but starts backfiring/spitting at higher ones. The fuel pump seems to keep working as long as I'm moving (vac from carb seems to help) but will then go dry if I stop too long. Will get one of those next day or two, then should be in pretty good shape for driving, although I plan on replacing the cap/rotor/points/condenser/wires, etc. also. Recieved a call from a real estate agent in Columbus, OH yesterday...she and her husband are buying a foreclosed duplex (2 1/2 stories w/basement) and they want me to return to rehab it for them...hoping I'll have this car ready for that trip when the time comes...closing is expected on Dec. 7. I'm currently in a small rural town a few miles S.W. of Gainesville, FL so it will be a pretty long drive! I think I'll invest in AAA before I go!
:driving:

We did Tampa/Cleveland and back in the MGB a few years ago. Only problem was the generator brushes, genny light came on 20 miles from the Ohio house. Drove it the rest of the way, got brushes at a Mentor parts place, 20 minutes of fussin' in the driveway... the trip back home made without incident. About an 18 hour trek each way.

Well, the Facet fuel pump arrived today and solved that problem! Cap, rotor, wire set, points, etc. should be in today at NAPA...the only item on my list that was in stock was the thermostat. Will update you after the tuneup is done! Thanks for the help guys!

The only part that came in today that was the right part was the wire set...weren't really the right set, but made do. Seems the distrib is from a '74, not a '77...sooo the cap, rotor, points were re-ordered...will be a couple more days! So much work to be done! Not hard to do...just a lot of it! :hammer: More later!

Wrong parts again today...but on the other hand, it's running pretty good! Just need to keep tweaking the timing a bit...need a bit more pick up and eliminate the popping in the exhaust, think that means I need to advance it a bit more? Now to start playing with some of the other stuff.

How is that done? Not one of the methods I've come across in the forums so far, tho there have been several. Pretty sure I can get my hands on a vac gauge, but then what/how?...and thanks for the suggestion!

Ought to peruse the TR site occasionally. We actually do talk "some" car stuff

DO a search and specify TR forum and Poolboy as the poster for Vacuum gauge.
There will be a few post. Weed thru it and you find the site that he post about.
A lot of TR guys swear by it.
