bonnet adjustment

I need to raise the closed position of the front end of the bonnet just a little. Is this done by screwing out the locking pin (surrounded by the spring in the center of the bonnet on a BJ8)? Sorry to sound stupid but I don't want to mess up the new paint so I only want to do this once.

That's a good place to start. If the resulting height is good, but the hood flutters (no tension on the now longer pin) you may need to raise your hood buffers a corresponding amount.

Nobody said this was going to be easy...

Okay, Randy, I unscrewed the pin to a point where it lines up the bonnet nicely. I have not driven it yet but it seems like there will be some play. How does one adjust the buffers? I assume you are referring to the rubber "bumpers" around the "gutter"? They don't look like the can be moved. I did stretch the spring a little. I could stretch it more???

The existing hood buffers can not be moved unless the lip they are riveted to is raised in that area. You might get some new ones and lower the attaching hole in them then install new rivets.--Keoke

My hood always wants to pop up and not stay latched. I've adjusted the pin on the hood without any luck. The attached pic is the underside of the sliding latch, is it normal for the metal to be at that angle or is it wore out? The pin appears to be ok. Thanks

Ok I got it, turns out the previous owner put the slider upside down! The wife tells me the hood has always popped up since she has owned it the past 20 years. Slowly but surely I'll get this car back to where it should be.

OH, it's a Longbridge built 100/6 (judging by the engine).

"Wife's had it twenty years;" can't wait to meet you and The Wife!

Yeah we will have to meet up one of these days since your right down the road from me. I'd like to checkout your AH.
Starting Friday I'll be off for two weeks, I plan on doing a bunch of work on the car.
Is having a longbridge a good or a bad thing?

Apparently Florida is becoming the land of the Longbridges! We just relocated, along with our 100-6, to the Villages a month ago from Maryland. The thing you will find about owning a Longbridge car is the minor differences in some areas. The top bows, curtains. Etc. we've had ours for over 30 years, and I usually have to remind my wife that we do take turns driving it, she can't drive all of the time!

Also, if the piece that the pin goes in to is not level, if it is slanted down, gently pull it back up to level.

Saw this post from 2011 and thought I'd reply in case others have the same issue.

Adjusting the front pin will align the height of the front of the bonnet. In order to keep the bonnet height even along the front edge and front sides, you'll need to adjust the two rubber buffers.

If they are too high, you can drill a new hole higher in the rubber buffers where the rivet will go though. You may also have to cut the inside cannel of the rubber so that it lowers too.

If you need to raise the rubber buffers to meet the bonnet or push the bonnet up a bit, you can try and drill a new hole lower in the rubber buffer.
If you don't have enough room to do that, then make a metal shim that will rivet into the existing hole in the bonnet rain channel.
Being the shim is taller, drill a new hole hole higher in the shim for the rivet that holds the rubber buffer.
The height of the shim will be dictated once you have the rubber buffer on it and the buffer makes contact with the bonnet.

End result is to have the rubber buffers pressing on the underside of the bonnet, helps for height alignment and non rattling. Hood pin not only sets the height of the front of the bonnet it also pulls it down and holds it in place. The two safety latches are just for back up in case the front pin lets go.

Here's 3 photos of how I did mine.

The hood release handle has a spring I'm trying to figure out how it's installed. I've seen the diagram and know the location but think my car has to be missing pieces. Here is a pic of what I have now, can someone tell or show me a pic how the spring is attached?

DSC_0105.jpghere is a pic of the other end of the rod spring. It has a small tag that stays in place by friction. Hope this helps

My 57 must be a little different, I ended up drilling a little hole for the spring and the other end is missing the little stopper so I just used a ty rap. I know this isn't the way it was done at the factory but the end results are the same. One more fix of many more to go completed. Thanks again for the pics for reference.

Tony,
that's how it was on our '57 also. The pull rod went through the grommet and there was a small hole for the spring end.

Ok I guess I didn't need to drill a hole, it must have been painted over since I couldn't find it.
