3000 Jack and Tools

Offline
dar100, once youve purchased the "shelly" jack and suffered the sticker shock i think your disire to buy additional original tools will be greatly depleated, search "jacking up prices" on the forum search feature, at that time the jacks alone were going for $600-$1000.00.as per ebay etc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Yes, I agree with anthony. The Shelly is tough to find and very expensive when you do find it.

My car ('66 BJ8) has a King Dick jack, identical to the one for sale on e-bay. Ironically, the jacking tools are original to the car and I'm assuming they fit the Shelly. In an absolutely insane senior moment I gave the wrong jack to the buyer of my '61 MGA 6 years ago. I tried to track down the car and recover the jack but the trail ran cold.
Either way, I wouldn't trust any 40 year old jack to actually hold the car up if I was underneath it. I use a Honda scissor jack for emergencies.

Should be easy to fix with a little bondo and a lick of paint, why should everyone else get to be a DPO and not you too? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

james and dar100,this is a "shelly" jack note the chunk missing from the ratchet handle socket, wonder how that happened, also note the bent upper section of the worm gear shaft, money could be better spent on other more important parts imho.

Alot of jack information, but who can answer the second part of the question:

"...where I can find a definitive list of the tools that came with the car..."

I would be very interested in this list as well )

Unlike earlier Healeys, I don't believe alot of tools came with the BJ8. The Shelly jack and handle, a spark plug wrench and tommy bar, a Thor knockoff hammer, and maybe a tool to remove grease retaining cup on the front wheels (unsure if included w/ BJ8) are the tools for the BJ8. BJ8's with octagonal knockoffs had a tool for their removal as well. Or yeah, and a bag to put the stuff in.

Well, this has certainly been informative and entertaining. Since I don’t expect to enter any concours events, I won’t be looking for a $1,000 jack!!! Especially based on Anthony’s pictures.

I suspect the dealer scarfed the jack, because I’m the 2nd owner, and the PO took excellent care of every little thing that came with the car. The dealer restores and sells Healeys as well (mine’s original), he probably thought the jack would be worth more in a restoration. Mind you, I’m not knocking him, because he never offered it with the car when I bought it, I just wasn’t paying close enough attention.

I’m thinking a small scissors jack with an appropriate top would work, any thoughts on this? Something flat that I can attach a thick pad to. Randy uses one from a Honda, what does everyone else use?

BTW, Anthony, I’m in Stamford about once a week checking on a project in zip 06902, is that near you? Do you wanna meet up for lunch sometime?

Duh! Hadn't even thought of looking there! Thanks

Now what's:

A.F.?
A tommy bar?
A "tubular" spanner? (Spark plug socket?)

Hang on, hang on...

The list of tools that were originally supplied with the cars may be found in the respective model's Parts Lists. The list, with some description, may also be found in the Concours Guidelines.

The kit for the BJ8 is very sparse, so you're in luck that you would have very few items to find if you decided to assemble a kit. Basically, there were only three items, plus a jack and jack handle:

Spark plug spanner.
A tommy bar.
Knock-off hammer.

That's it! Now of course there were variations if your BJ8 had pressed steel wheels or octagonal knock-offs, but for the vast majority of them, the kit was just those three items (or five items, counting the jack and jack handle), and the bag that held them.

The Supplementary Tool Kit was something altogether separate from the kit that came with the car. The Supplementary Tool Kit was an option that was available for separate purchase. See attached photo.

[The late jacks for these cars typically sell for $100-300, as far as I have observed, and I will quite happily sell my last one for $1000, if anyone would like to pay that much! I also have a very few reproduction jack handles for sale (I had them made about 15 years ago) for $20 each, postage paid in the USA. They are a simple 18-inch length of 1/2-inch metal rod, cadmium plated, and with the ends slightly beveled.]
