Yet another mystery car photo

This was the "picture of the month" on my site & will be replaced in a few days. Not very common - I know a few people will know it right off but I suspect it'll be a mystery to most, although the wheels will give away the country of origin.

By the way - check out the wheel clearance, especially in the rear.

Give us a hint - I think Italian?

Bruce - you're right, it's Italian. The company was named for its founder & the founder's nephew's name is Dino. (I just realized that these "hints" probably apply to most Italian car builders - sorry). It's not a Ferrari or a Maserati.

vagt6 - I agree, it's a pretty car for sure.

I'll post the founder's first name in a while - that'll bring the answer with a quick google search, with some colorful stories about him besides.

Thanks, RG, for the idea. Went to coldplugs site, saw the same car pic, and don't know any more now than when I figured it must be Italian based on the look of the house in the background.

I think Stanguellini was a great guess, but the car is not a Stanguellini. The picture on my site was used as a "picture of the month" & I usually don't comment on them. There are a few other pictures buried on the site where the car appears in the background & is identified - it's probably the identical car but was a different color at the time.

The builder's first name was Ilario - if you use that and "car" or "racer" as a Google search argument then you'll get a few articles that will provide the name. My favorite is the short writeup on the Veloce site (it'll be high on the Google list) where they provide a short book review.

I thought that was the Italian Mustang...

Here's a picture I have that I listed as "Stangellini".
It was taken at the Lime Rock Vintage in '04 (John, you may have been there).
I'm pretty sure that the car listed one "Mr. Nardi" (of the steering wheels) as the original race mechanic for this classic.

Hi Nial - the correct spelling is "Stanguellini" and, as you probably know, your photo shows a Stanguellini Formula Jr. car from about 1960. I remember when these first started appearing in races in the US - everyone thought of them as baby Maserati 250F's. They had FJ pretty much locked up until the Lotus 18 and the Cooper FJ came along.

It was a pretty interesting class for a while, with lots of variety. Then it got expensive, which defeated its original intent.

(Yes - we missed each other in 2004. I didn't go this year (I wasn't thrilled with the '04 event & went fishing instead) although 2 of my kids did.) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

Hi Nial - the correct spelling is "Stanguellini"...

Whoops....my bad.

I don't blame you for going fishing. I enjoy the social aspect of the vintage stuff and the cars are wonderful, but it's pretty much the same from year to year.....going every 2 or 3 years would be plenty.
I considered entering the event but the total fees are around $800 and you barely get 15 laps for that (I can get 60+ laps at an EMRA event for about $225).
I only live about 2 hours from Lime Rock so it's an easy run for me....otherwise, I'd go less often.

I continue to enjoy your "coldplugs" website....great job!

Is it a 'Bandidi' or, maybe, 'Bandino' - not sure which?

Can't find them but kept going back to the Paris Street Scene.

Also I must have been at the NY Auto show the same time you were!

It is a Bandini.

Bingo! Yes, it's a Bandini. Thanks for sticking with it.

Re the New York Auto Show, there must be 10 people who tell me the same thing. One worked in the Triumph exhibit that year, one ended up with a Ferrari that was shown that year, most (like me) were onlookers. Maybe we all ought to have a reunion?

The "Paris Street Scene" picture was for real, more or less. This sort of thing happened regularly in that area because of vents from the Metro but the one on the site was a setup - they were shooting a commercial and I simply took advantage. You can see a truck with a sort of hidden camera in the background.

The Bandini is well hidden on the site - There's one in the background of a picture of Ray Saidel, and here it is at VIR, closest to the camera:

Roger obviously had this also when he asked earlier about Lorenzo. I always assumed they were related but looked quickly on the net to check and now I'm not so sure. I'll see if I can find out.

DART - yes, there is a resemblance, isn't there? Re SP250's, you've probably seen it but the December issue of "Classics Monthly" has an article on a Dart restoration.

Nial - 2 hours to Lime Rock? I wish I could say the same.
