I think that is a G not a C at the beginning.
G = MG
A = A series
N = 2 seat roadster
5 = Series
U = Left hand drive (USA)
Numbers thereafter is your serial number.
It should read:
GAN5UC121186G
Although the G at the end is only for 1500's.
G = MG
A = A series
N = 2 seat open car
5 = fifth series
U = North American car
C = Model/production year, i.e., 1972
121,186 = car/vin number, i.e., built in late May early June
G = assembled at Abington
I had/have GAN5UC106930G and it left the line on August 18th 1971.
I would suspect that Biff is correct although if 5UC is a 1972 car and 5UB is a 1971 car how can 5UC121186 still be considered a 1972 and biult in 1972? I though that the letter designation determined it's year.

Just noticed that last part of this quote. G cannot be for 1500's. I have a 1275.
H and G are spridget prefixes, H also appeared on Innocenti, but that's besides the point.
C at the front? now I'm intrigued.
Belay my G at the end, Vping correct.
