Wedge TR8 thermostat temp ratings

What are all the wedgies running for thermostats? I am currently using a 160 thermostat but it seems like it takes forever to warm up. I have HIF6 carbs. I'll be trying a 180 thermostat this weekend (still using water for coolant until the bugs are worked out).

I have a 180 in my TR7 with HS6 carbs which seems to work well, I was worried about overheatign the v8 but I now have a new radiator and higher flow electric fans.

180, use it year around. The TR7 4 cyl is easier to overheat than the V8. If there are no air bubbles in the V8 cooling system, the radiator in good condition ad tune correct, they can actually run on the cool side. That's been my experience anyway. They do take a while to warm up in cool weather though. Sometimes that aluminum is too efficient at shedding heat.

I must have had a bad thermostat. I put in a new 180 thermostat and it warms up faster; but by the temperature gauge runs at a lower temperature!? Can't figure that one out. NOw that the cooling issues appear to be sorted out I'll be transitioning to coolant instead of water.
