Wedge TR8 Starter Wiring

The rebuilder of my starter has replaced the solenoid with one that has two identical terminal posts -- the original had two posts of different sizes so the two wires could only be replaced one way. Does it matter which of the two wires goes to each of the identical posts on the new solenoid?

This is a DC motor, so it is polarity sensitive. If the polarity is backwards, it will rotate in the opposite direction. This is not good. Just make sure you bench test it before you install the motor. Then mark the terminals accordingly. Good luck.

Frank, the two wires goiing to the solenoid are the ones in question. The large wire from the battery and the ground are correct.

Assuming that this is not a permanent magnet motor, polarity does not matter. The field coil and the armature both reverse their magnetic directions as the supply polarity is reversed. This is not the case with a generator as there is residual magnetism and you have to repolarize it.

Sorry The solenoid is basically a heavy duty relay. One heavy cable in and one out. doesn't matter which terminal, since this is only a contact. This controls the high current required to turn the starter. In addition there is one small wire that comes from the ignition switch (key or key plus starter button) the structure of the starting solenoid is usually grounded, which complets this circuit.
