TR6 TR6 Ignition Switch

I tested the switch and it appears to be in good condition. Installing a new harness and want to make certain everything is functioning properly. The old harness was heavily melted at the switch and ammeter.

Now I'm looking at the ignition switch wiring diagram from my B/L repair manual. I was unable to keep tract of what wire goes where. Both the repair manual and Dan Master's manual indicate the terminal 1 connects to 2 Brown/White wires; terminal 2 connects to 2 White wires; terminal 3 connects to 1 White/Red wire and terminal 4 isn't used.

The problem is terminal 1 only has one spade terminal, while the other three terminals have 2 spades. Terminals 2 & 3 show scratching on both of their spades, while I don't see scratching on terminal 1 from the old quick slide connector.

Does anyone recall what the wiring configuration is here.

Doug,

Look further down the B/L manual to page 86.65.02. It seems to contradict the previous page with Terminal #1 with 1 white (the only single terminal, #2 Brown/White, #3 White/Red & #4 Auxillary.

Thanks Paul. The manual I'm using covers TR4-TR6 as it has the best diagrams of all my catalogs. Unfortunately, I don't see this one.

Doug,

This is the big TR6 Factory Manual. I was agreeing with you until I happened to scroll further down and saw this R&R instructions and wiring diagram.

Which once again proves, that nothing is ever as it seems with these cars and manuals.

There are no straight roads with these cars. I've been to the turn key point for a week, but wanted to make sure I wouldn't cook the new harness. Several problems along the way, and still a few lose ends.

I finally hooked up the battery tonight. Lights-good, flashers-good, wipers-no good, ignition switch needs attention. The starter kicks in too soon. I can't run the motor as the starter will be running at the same time. Either wiring or the switch needs reinstalled.

Doug.......you don't mention, or I missed, what year TR6 you have. The ignition switch & its wiring changed over the years and the new replacement ones differ even more from what may have been stock. Moss talks about how they may have to be rewired in their catalog. If you don't have the AAW wire schematic you should download it as it's the best wire diagram available. Dan worked with a few of the BCF guys to get his diagrams accurate.

My car is a '72 with an original ignition switch. I bought the harness from TRF and bought Dan's book at the same time.
There has been conflicting info in the diagrams from different books that just isn't panning out.

That's why you should download they newest color AAW schematics. About 5 or 6 years ago Dan Masters recognized that the factory diagrams weren't accurate and enlisted the aid of some Triumph Mail List members to work with him to draw up accurate diagrams. The newest ones on the AAW site have been upgraded to include color wires to match the wire color code. I don't know if his book has the color
version. Mine doesn't but it's one of the first copies and is quite old.

I'll muddy things up even more with the two diagrams below. The top one is from the Repair Operations Manual and is for a '72 LHD TR6 while the one under it is from AAW............and they match! One change from what you stated up above is that they both show 3 white wires coming off of one of the terminals.

Thanks Bob. Gotta love it!!

My problem with the three wires was that my diagram was showing two female ends coming from one male.

By the way Robert. You got an ATTA Boy on the TR7/8 forum today

Yes sir, Somebody used your site to fix their Rheo on a Wedge and I gave you and Paul Credo's and went along with the Atta boys they gave.
Said you guys were the bomb!

Finally found the right combination and have ignition. All the diagrams I had illustrate the #1 terminal at the top position. Went to my other garage this AM and picked up the Bentley manual. My #1 terminal is at the bottom.

Most of the shop manual electrical diagrams don't number the terminals. Amazing that I needed 4 different shop manuals to finally get things straight.

Just like the Gospels in the New Testament!

Unfortunately, I think my car has moved to the other side this year.

This topic came up at just the right time for me, I just got a Lucas ignition switch to replace my generic off the shelf part that came with the car, when wired as per Haynes I only got power to ignition and lights when cranking the starter, that won't do!

Autopress Workshop Manual for Triumph TR5, TR250, TR6, 1967-71 had a detail illustration for underdash wiring that was very helpful and did the trick. It I had to match the terminals in the illustration to those on my switch ,but luckily the illustration was readable and accurate AND matched my switch, and now the big ugly bezel that went with the aftermarket switch is gone, replaced by the tidy, stylish, chrome OEM item. Sometimes its the small things in life that give you pleasure.
