TR2/3/3A TR3 Gearlever Anti-rattle spring&plunger Install?

Finally have a new spring and plunger to end the annoying shifter rattle. does anyone know a good way to install the plunger and spring without the whole works disappearing into the black hole void where all small British parts disappear into? I'm assuming the gearbox cover has to come off so you can get your fingers between the top cover and trans. The new spring exerts quite a bit of pressure and holding the plunger onto the spring and compressing it could be problematic? I wonder if a flat blade screwdriver holding the works in and lowering it down....gently pulling the screwdriver out without popping the plunger would work? anyone been there and done this? thx CK

From what I remember, it's pretty much a plug and play thing, not complicated at all. I do remember adding a dab of lithium grease to the works. The new spring and plunger didn't have any change to the general sounds coming from the gearbox area in my car....

The grease thing is "right on' I, however, have been thru 2 spring retainer changes and still have the dreaded rattle!
Less offensive, but still there......good luck.

Gordon,

This technical service bulletin, which was posted at the end of the thread https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcforum/ubbthreads.php/topics/524501, fixed my rattle recently:

"GEARSHIFT LEVER CHATTER: The simple corrective measure has been dealt with in a separate Bulletin which seems to have been overlooked by many service shops. Therefore, to briefly recapitulate, remove the gearshift lever knob and boot, remove the top cover bolt and cover together with the inner cover and spring. Slide down over the gearshift lever a fairly heavy piece of rubber or neophrene tube 7/8" long and 5/8" inside diameter. Press it down until it comes in contact with the fulcrum ball. Reassemble and that is all that is necessary. The rubber or neophrene will act as a vibration damper in this position."

After the installation, the hose had to be shortened a bit because its initial length prevented the lever from being pulled up far enough to go into reverse. Also, the rubber boot would no longer grip the edge of the hole in the tunnel, but the application of 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive made it do so.

Excellent. Finally a solution. Now if only I can get the plunger and spring in along with the 7/8 boot. Thanks to all who responded. Cheers Karl

Karl,

Make sure the spring you have for the gearshift lever is the correct length (about 5/16" long). The springs for the gearbox synchro hubs are the correct diameter but are about 9/16" long. It's easy to get them mixed up and believe me you can spend quite a while trying to get the incorrect longer spring into the gearshift lever along with the plunger (or so I hear).
