tips please on removing starter motor on 100-6

Newbie here. Any tips on removing the starter from my 100-6? Does the distributor and the oil filter both have to come out?
I'm assuming it has to come out the top? Any ideas getting it out without dinging something?
Regards, and thanks...

Just took mine out a couple of months ago and I have the spin on filter, so it may be easier on mine. I can't remember, but I think it can't go out the bottom because of the frame rails. I know that the gear reduction starter came in from the top because I had to take it on and off a few times to make sure the adapter bracket was oriented correctly. I left the dizzy in place, but I removed the wires that interfered.

It must be weaseled out the top of the engine bay, Just a few athletic orientations will let you remove it.
It is not rocket science OK.
Pretty simple to do as Olin pointed out.

Mike:

Agree with Olin and Keoke. Not sure what manuals say, but would recommend loosening and lifting up transmission tunnel cover to get a straight shot at the nuts/bolts securing the starter to bellhousing.

It should come out without removing the trans tunnel:

I found it convenient to index my distributor base to the block so it's easy to remove it with the wires and get it back in the same exact place. With the filter and distrib out of the way, it's pretty easy to get it out the top as the others have said, disconnecting the battery first.

Many thanks to all of you...didn't expect this overwhelming response with pictures and explanations. This will certainly give me a better
handle on the job.
