TR2/3/3A Timing the TR3

I'm helping a friend get his TR3 with pertronix ignition road ready. I've reviewed several posts about timing that keep referring to vernier or knurled knob for setting timing. Is the vernier the knob at the top of the distributor opposite the vacuum advance?

Sorry for the elementary question. Posting a picture with an arrow pointing out the knob would be most helpful.

Welcome, Tex!

Yep - you are right about the knob. See item 32 here.

I just found this out also. Its for the vacuum advance .

It works the same sliding plate that the vacuum advance operates but the knob has no affect on the vacuum advance itself.

The knob is merely a way to adjust the distributor w/o loosening the clamp that holds the whole distributor body.

Useful ofr fine tuning (especially along the side of the road or in a gas station) and (depending on the method you choose to follow) setting the advance once the points are set to open at TDC.

I've never worked with Pertronix so I think what I said just now is still true but possibly not too relevant.

Still just as relevant with the Pertronix. Same effect.

Welcome MrTex -

Beaumont isn't all that far away from Houston, please let him know about our club here as a potential resource:
Texas Triumph Register

Also we are hosting the 2012 VTR Nationals in Galveston at the end of October - that would be a great opportunity to tire kick and meet people. Convention info is can be found on our website.
