Sunbeam Alpine Compression Ratio

I have a freind looking to rebuild a 1725cc motor for a Sunbeam Alpine, does anyone know the approximate compression ratio a flat top piston for one of these motors creates?

What is a safe ratio for reliable street running?

I understand stock is 9.2 to 1 or so.
