Speedometer Cable

is the speedometer cable the same for most year B's?

I doubt that i have the original motor and trans in my car, and i was going to hook up the speedo (it was unplugged when i bought the car, just painted).

Well, it doesn't seem like it will reach. I believe i found the correct place, it was at the back of the tranny and had the threads on it.

Anyway, do different tranny;'s have different positions for the speedo cable?

Rob

ps, mine is a 4sp withouth OD

not sure about the tranny mount point, but I do know that if you want to keep it in full stock trim not all speedo cables are the same length. I'm not sure what year it started (possibly when they added the catalytic converter?), but I know that there are some cars that have a 'service interval' counter under the hood, like my '76. The speedo cable in these cars is 2 different pieces: 1) goes from the tranny to the counter, 2) goes from the counter to the speedo in the dash.

I didn't know this information until the cable between the tranny and counter broke on my '76 B.

I've also heard that there are 2 different types of connections at the back of the speedo itself. Again, I don't know specifics, but I do know that one type has a 90deg fitting on the back of the speedo, and the other goes straight out the speedo and into the fire wall. Given my car has a straight type connection on the speedo, I'm almost willing to assume the 90deg fitting cars are likely to be the earlier types.

Given you have a '76, you might still have a stock setup. Check under the hood for a yellow counter attached to the firewall on the right side of the engine (opposite side of the exhaust). On my '76, there's a 90deg elbow fitting on the right hand side of the tranny (passenger side) towards the rear that the cable connects to. The cable that is plugged into my tranny has a square cable at the end for the counter, and the cable seems flat and oblong on the tranny end. The other section of cable (between the counter and speedo) has square cable on both ends. Other then what the cable looks like on the ends the connections appear nearly identical, except the ridges on the outside of the connection cap on the tranny end seemed a bit more coarse than the other connection caps, if memory serves me correctly.

Hmmm,
I don't seem to have the counter any longer (it is probably in a big box at the PO's house, with an air pump, single carb and electronic ignition)

what comes out of the firewall is all i have.

It appears that the connection at the tranny is a 90 degree elbow (which i was not expecting)

It was a the back, coming out of the bottom. I haven't put the car on jack stands yet, so it is hard to get under there.
I'll lift it up and post a pic tomorrow.

Thanks.

Rob

Hmmmm ... my '73 is a straight connector at the back of the speedo.

actaully, the cable is hooked up to the speedo ok, it is the plug that screws into the tranny that i can not reach.

is this the cable that came with the car?

Maybe it's time to order a new one? they're not too expensive.

it came with the car when i bought it... i have no idea if it is original or not.
