TR2/3/3A Shed some light on Fiberglass TR3 hardtop

Does anyone have information on TR3 fiberglass hardtops. I am interested in who made them and how they attach to the car. I have someone that claims he has one but I am not familiar with them.

I have one of the Parrish tops on my 3A. The window is slightly different from the metal roofs and the profile is a little more round and higher on the top, but it fits well and is VERY easy to fit and remove. Small J hooks go from the front mounts to new holes drilled in the side of the windscreen. The rear J hooks fit into small plates that go on the hood frame. No need to remove it to install the hardtop! All the mounting parts are available from Smoothline but not cheap IMHO.

After nearly 6 years of owning my '3, I've only just discovered this afternoon, after looking at Gordon's reply, that the fiberglass top I've got stored in my garage rafters is actually a steel top. I went to the Parrish Plastics website, and thought my top was different than what was shown. Not wanting to be totally dumb, I wondered, "<span style="font-style: italic">what if</span>", and sure enough, a magnet stuck to the top. I don't know whether to be happy, or chagrined.

Guess I'll have to pay more attention when TRF has a sale on hardtop hardware!

Did cars come from the factory w/ both hard and soft tops, or was one a dealer-supplied piece? Guess I should order the British Heritage Certificate...

Hmmmph, who knew?

Yes...and yes!Cars could be ordered with either or both, but it apparently wasn't that uncommon to see a car equipped ONLY with a hardtop. Of course, it was removable, but one then would have no weather protection. I remember years ago seeing an original late TR3A that was just that way, with no evidence that hoodsticks had ever been installed!

But of course, any or all of the above would've been available to order from the dealer as well!

It could be either the Parrish hardtop or an early original option hardtop. The early hardtop were fiberglass and then later switch to steel.

So why do I feel like a dope?

Anyone have an exploded view of a hardtop/parts and Stanpart numbers? THe book has the numbers, not the diagram.....

Sorry for hijacking this thread.....

haha....when I take possession of all my parts, in about a month....I will re take the thread, even with some photos. On the bright side I showed pictures of it to my wife she said....wow that is nice......

So I guess the thread accomplished the purpose of enlightening us all about hardtops....

I have one... first- the faun felt liner from TRF does not fit them-- the window cutout is wrong. TRF's is only for the steel factory hardtop.

They (or at least mine) mount using a couple of L-brackets (homemade) in the front to the windshield frame, and on the sides to where the hood-sticks attach.

Let me know if you want pix.

BTW-- there is a <span style="text-decoration: underline">sweet</span> steel one with spotlight mounted on e-bay, in LA. Jim
