S101 - Differential Spreading Tool.

Since it is off the car, I figured I would change the oil seals, check the bearing, clean and paint the differential on my TR6.

I got the case open. I removed the inner shafts. I pulled the carrier bearing caps. All with surprising ease.

Then I came to the part about using the S101 tool. Is there any work arounds for not having this tool? Or should I just put everything back together, since it all looks like it is good to go?

Jack

I do often diffs and never used the spreader tool.
The pretensioned cage slips in without and you can FEEL how much tension you have.
Just take car the the bearing rings don't go sideways while pushing it in, hold them together.

Cheers

I wrapped some wire rope around the carrier and suspended it from my vise then used a hammer to apply enough incentive to get the carrier out. I think someone on this forum suggested that method to me. Make sure you have some thing ready to catch the diff. I had my floor jack just beneath with a few towels and rags soften the drop. It went back in with little effort.

Jack you got a camera. One day I will do it.

To extract the cage.....

Take two big screwdrivers. Slip them from both sides into the cage and then some lever action and the cage comes out.

I used this technique and it just poped right out with no effort at all.

Here is a picture for the screwdriver technique. It is as simple as it sounds.

I was real surprised how good of condition the internals were. I set up one of those electric rust removal systems to take off the rust and then I will paint it with some of the eastwood paint and wait for my oil seals to come in, before I put it back together.
