In my effort to reduce muffler heat to the passenger compartment, I've taken the following approach.... 1) hi-tech foil insulation attached to the underside (as used on race cars), 2) replacement fiberboard with an air-gap, and 3) 1/16" aluminum cover. Inside the car with have both a heat and sound barrier. I did something similar to this on my last build and it was extremely effective.
I've added the aluminum covers to all the fiberboard heat shields. As I'm sure you know, on the original cars, this fiberboard was actually asbestos. Of course, asbestos is not legally used anymore. Honestly, I'm not sure what this fiberboard material is.... it seems like a concrete like material sometimes used around home fireplaces. If anyone knows I'd be interested.
