real reason for no tunes

Well, I have now discovered why so many BJ8s have no radio. It isn't for exhaust tones, it's cause you cannot easily check the gear box oil!
I just put in quick disconects and designated tube socket to aid in taking out the radio. The Redline leaks out a bit so I needs to checking a lot.
I still love having the radio and added a jack to use headphones(2). Sound pretty good for monoral.
What do others do?

I like what you've come up with TH...I mean McGyver

What do others do?

GPS with built in MP3.
Only 1" thick. So no access issue to trans dip stick.
Wired to 4 powered computer speakers.
Rock on!

Sorry,

If I want to listen to music while I drive, I take my BMW. The only music I need in the Healey is the sweet sound of the exhaust. Nice install though.

Dougie

Hey Dougie,

Don't be sorry, we have the best of both worlds. We have the sweet sound of our exhaust too. We choose, with or without the music!

Plus it's nice to have Nav, as you may have in your bimmer.

Cheers

Ya,

I guess your right. I'll have to admit there have been more than one occasion I would love to have had Stephen Wolfs "Born to be Wild" blaring in the back ground as I tore down the old Columbia River Highway here in Oregon. The right car, right road, right song, I'll buy.

Dougie

I just sing to myself.

Born to be wild.

No one can hear me

cheers

Mark

A little off this topic Dougie, but what a wonderful flashback I just had, looking at the photo you posted. I remember sitting in the passenger seat, about the same size as your son, just being able to see over the dash and side window, as my dad drove.

Seems we have the same car, 64-65. My Dads car was a 64 phase two, red with black interior. (I've the same car my dad drove, just different colors). Anyway, thank you very much for that flashback!

Cheers, Roger

Wrong group though.... Steppenwolf :driving:

Born to be Wild Audio

Wasn't there a favorite road tunes thread not so long ago? Born to be Wild is right up there with "Take it Easy." There actually is a corner in Winslow Arizona dedicated to the song. Right on Route 66. Must see if you're ever there, though I heard there was some damage recently.

You guys sure do get off the track (hwy) a bit. But what do others do about the access to the gear box dip stick?
(Dougie, I did that beautiful Columbia River run two years ago in the Porche to pick up Healey parts from a great guy on Mt Hood. It was a memerable senic drive.)

Rodger,

I love to hear stories like that. The picture I posted was taken during the '98 Austin Healey Rendezvous Rally in Central Oregon. Dylan my son was 8 at the time and he was my navigator. Our car is a '65 BJ8 BRE. great trip, lots of memories.

Tahoe Healey, was it Kent Lambert in Hood River, OR that you picked up parts from?

And I never owed a Steppenwolf album, just loved the song.

Dougie

Yep. It was Kent. Got the tour of the two level garage and the concourse gold 100. I got a NOS first motion shaft for Bill Boulton to install. We drove the gear box to Bill to work on. Another super guy. You must grow them in Oregon. You throw in the wine in the Willamette Valley and we had a great time.

I still remember standing in the back seat (1974...pre child-seat days) looking out the rear window of my dads GTO Judge while "Radar Love" was playing. At night, I would try to identify what kind of car was behind us by their headlights.

When I was a little bit older, he had a pickup truck and I would sit in the middle right next to him and shift gears while he drove. Obviously can't do that now, he'd probably get a ticket, but that is one of my most cherished memories growing up.

Went looking for steppenwolfs best of cd (steppenwolf gold), think it had a lot of the easy rider songs on it, a few years ago, wasnt available on cd, which record company now stocks it?
Another good driving song is arlo guthries "boots of steel"

Hi Rich,
Glad you're enjoying the radio. When I pulled it out, there was a rigid piece of metal similar to plumber's strap (many holes) that held the back of the radio up a little. I don't know if the dealer did that, or my dad made the mod so he could access the dipstick. The rig didn't look particularly professional.

I want to make up a Townes Van Zandt/Jerry Jeff Walker/Lucinda Williams mix and take a ride out to West Texas.

Hey TH, keeping on track with your first post, I would, and most likely others too, would love to see photos of your engineering skills. Can you post some how-to-do-this easy removable radio improvement?

Cheers, Roger
