TR2/3/3A Re-starting a warmed up motor?

I used to be able to re-start the car after a fast run and the motor was still warm by just pressing the starter button . Lately I have had to pull the choke button out about half way to restart under those conditions or the starter would just crank super slowly. With the choke out a bit it fires up right away. Is this an indication of an older battery on the way out? Why would the motor need the extra fuel to start a recently run hot engine?

With a hot engine, heat soak on the carbs is usually the culprit. If a battery is low, the starter can pull just enough juice away from the ignition system to cause problems also.

Pushing in the clutch takes some load off the starter. A few years ago my battery was losing charge, so I checked my paperwork to see if it was still under warranty, it was 12 years old, how time flies.

The modern gear drive starters do a better job of spinning it over in any case. If the old Lucas
is dragging ,freshen it up or replace it. But neither will work with a weak battery.....

Might be the battery and the starter have seen better days. If the battery is older than say 4 years, I would get the battery first and naturally clean all connections in the starting system. When you get the engine spinning around like it should, then on those hot days or warm engine days hold the gas pedal down to let more air inside the engine.

Needing the choke on a warm engine sounds like la lean mixture or an ignition problem. Make sure the lifter are set then take the car out and drive it some then check ignition before you go onto setting carburetor adjustments too much. Fine tuning the carbs should be later or last in the tune up procedure.
