Is there a way to replace the Oil pump in a GT6 MKII with out having to pull the engine???
I have removed the motor mounts and lifted the engine as much I as I can, but still can't get enough clearance from the cross member to remove the sump (oil pan).
Any help or advice would be very welcome

Thanks

Mikey

I have dropped the pan on our car (many, many years ago) to fit new bearing shells but for the life of me I cannot remember what the trick was. I remember lifting the engine up as high as possible and supporting the front pulley on chunks of 4x4. Beyond that I don't know what else I did. It may be necessary to turn the crank to a certain position at the same time... I just don't remember.

Do know you will have to turn the pan to clear the screen. It sticks out pretty good and there is a slot it will have to come out through.
That may be the problem you are having now.
Hope you dropped the exhaust, any stress on those old manifolds will give you a crack. IE, expensive.

From what I remember on our Mk1 engine, the original factory pump had no screen, just a long, conical, cast iron pickup tube. That tube went down through a plate welded across the top of the pan so you have to drop the pan pretty far to clear the tube. Fortunately that is pretty far back on the block (being below the distributor).

If your pump is the original one, I think all that is available now is the TR6 pump. You can use that but it requires you remove a bit of that plate I mentioned that is on the top of the oil pan. This will become clear once you get the pan off.

Thanks for the replies!

Not that far yet, I have lifted the engine as much as possible after taking the motor mounts off completely. The oil pan extends forward right over the cross member so you can't drop it down more than a few inches. On the back end it hits the engine block where the block and transmission bell housing meet. I need about 1/2 inch more clearance there to slide the oil pan out. I guess i could pry it out with a bar, but that would pretty much toast the pan.
Last time I took the pan off the engine was on a stand, so it was easy.

I don't remember having to pry the pan off/down but I do remember that the pan just barely came out with my lifting and supporting the front pulley as high as I could get it. Though I did not do this at the time, I might have been able to get a little more lift if I had removed the transmission tunnel from the car.
