I have no idea when the initial damage occurred, but as soon as I came out of the car wash with the Telluride I noticed about a 4” crack emanating from the lower left area of the windshield. Upon inspection I could see that something (probably small rock) had chipped the windshield. Of course it was a very small chip that was below the level of the hood so went unnoticed until it started to crack today.
Now, a couple hours later the crack has spread considerably:

Cost to replace through Safelight is north of $1300. My deductible is $500. Sigh.
I have an appointment next week but just got this wonderful notice from Safelight:

Ugh- bad enough to find the crack, worse to see it spread. And *worst* to learn the replacement may be "back ordered".

Does the windshield replacement actually come under your deductible?
I thought most policies cover a replacement windshield…. Of course every policy is different.
 
Same here - my policy has a separate "full glass coverage - no deductible".

Nope Mine is covered under the normal comprehensive with a deductible. I probably could have had something like full glass coverage but I'm sure my premiums would be higher.

I parked my old Ford ranger for a couple of months once and put a sun reflector behind the windshield, when I went back to it to use it again, the windshield had not one but a cobweb of cracks in it. I believe the sun reflector added heat to the glass and cracked it. It was in mid-summer a few years ago. We only use it now around the place for odd jobs. Never replaced the glass! :devilgrin:

In my case I speculate that the chip was already there, just waiting for the right conditions to crack. The windshield glass was hot from driving around in the summer sun, then taking it into the car was introduced very cold water onto the hot glass and - CŘąČķ!!

PS: Usually, if I notice a chip or small star, I will take it immediately for repair, which is covered under my policy for free. Guess I need to get into the habit of checking the windscreen more closely from time to time.
 
I'd never thought of that, but sure makes sense. Hot sun, hot windshield - then wash with cold water. Result: not good.

(As us Yankees have learned, if your windshield is covered with ice after a winter storm ... don't use hot water to melt the ice.)
 
I watched my neighbor one cold morning, which was a few weeks long, take a bucket of water and from the kitchen door threw it on his winshield. Windshield made a loud crack. I said did you just throw hot water on the windshielld? He said no, knew better, I used cold. Even cold water was some on 50* warmer and spider webbed that glass. I cracked up.

Back around 77 or 78 I was stationed at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, MT. One very cold (below zero) winter morning, I decided to warm up the car (Datson B210) for a few minutes so the drive to work would be less miserable.
After warming up for a few minutes, I got in the car, shut the door, and hear "Crashhhhhh". The rear window broke into a million little pieces and fell out, all over the back seat area.
70 degrees on the inside, -19F outside. The glass didn't like the temp differential.
 
I'm almost afraid to ask ... did the Datsun have rear window heating/defrosting?
