TR2/3/3A New Windscreen Glass quality

Hello-
After waiting over four months, I finally received the windscreen glass I ordered from one of the British car suppliers. It was very well packaged in a wooden box with lots of foam to protect it. I was also pleased to see was Pilkington glass measuring .228” thick.

Unfortunately, when I fully unpacked it and went to install it, I noticed strange scallops on both lower corners of the glass.

The scallops are deep enough (3/16-1/4”) that the lower sides of glass are captured by the channel only by about 1/16”. I was told by the supplier that all the glass they have is like that and others have successfully installed them.

My question is: has anyone else purchased TR3 glass like this and successfully installed it? Is this indeed what the new glass looks like or was my glass finished by a trainee at the factory?

Wow. I guess you can try it, but I'd be prone to send it back...

Yeah John, that was my first impulse as well but then what are my options?

Will the glass I received work?... The answer is, probably, yes. The issue is whether there will be problems with it afterward since the fit will not be as John Black's team designed it. If I send it back, I then have a broken windshield and nothing to replace it with.

Do you have any recommendations on where I can find a better quality TR3A windscreen glass?

I am guessing, but I think the lower curve is where the bracket or something goes, but not sure, but again I remember something happening in that spot, so might be a good thing. I believe it will work.

It could be they are adapting another windshield to fit the TR3 pattern and that is part of the other screen.

Just a thought.

To close this thread, I ended up using the new windscreen glass and it installed OK and it seemed to seal at the corners. Measuring the new glass, I noticed it is 0.228" thick vs 0.250" original I removed, so when I installed it with the glazing I ordered with the glass, I needed to add a wrap of friction tape around the glass to get a good fit.

I was surprised at the difference in the glazing strips. The Moss strip I originally used was hard rubber with very little give vs the other that was slightly thinner but had a putty consistency that really made it much easier to work with.

I'm guessing the Moss strip I used the first time caused my windshield to crack. It might be fine with newer .228" glass but was too thick for the thicker original glass. It was such a tight fit that it needed bar clamps to pull the windshield into the channel. The combination of a tight fit and the stresses I placed on the glass with the clamps caused the original windshield to crack three weeks after I installed it.

If I had to do it again, I'd take measurements of windshield channel along with the glass and then determine what glazing thickness is required.

Glad those corner deal cut outs on the glass worked out. I could get the same problem someday. Over the years I have gathered a few different thicknesses of glazing also. The best stuff I got was from large window/windshield store. Heck I think they gave it to me.
