New Guy 948 ribcase question

Hello and Thanks in advance. The car is a 948 Midget with the original smoothcase. I also have a 1098 ribcase available.
Is it a simple switch and bolt in or are there other changes needed? Do I need the 1098 back plate? Is the input shaft different?
After reading what I could find online still wasn't certain. And did they change ratios with the Midget box? So a bugeye smoothcase would
be going backwards? Hope this wasn't too much for an intro. Thanks, Joe

I think there is considerable mods that need done to fit the later engines to the smooth case box. I believe that "Gerards Garage" covers it.

Kurt.

I'd like to use a 1098 ribcase on a 948 engine. I have seen "Gerards" site and wanted to to make sure I understood.
Do I use the 1098 backplate and the 948 clutch?
Thanks, Joe

That's correct. Make sure you use the correct release bearing and pushrod too.

Hey Thanks Gerard.
Do you mean the 948 release bearing and pushrod?
And only the 1098 backplate or can the 1275 work too?
Joe

There are two 1098 rear back plates, but either should work. The 1275 will work also. Make sure you get the oil pump cover also and make sure it matches the opening of the backplate because there are two different sizes of those also.

The release bearing has to match the clutch, so yes, 948. 948 and 1098 pushrods should be the same length, but depending on some of the other variables, you might have better results with the slightly longer 1275 one. They are cheap enough to buy one of each and see which works better. Replace anything where the hole or pin is no longer round; sloppy pivot points make for a lot of loss in travel, and it's cumulative.
