Moss stainless exhaust offering.

Does anyone run or have experience with a Moss Tourist Trophy stainless exhaust system? If so, what are your (civil) thoughts regarding same?

Elrey, I've got this exhaust system on my BJ7. It looks good, and was no real problem to fit on the car, but my major complaint is that it is a bit noisy especially at cruising speeds. I've been watching the other thread presently going about re-packing mufflers and am wondering if that might be an option for me to quite the droning a bit?

I have it on my car also. The pipes bumped the suspension in the rear somewhere, hard to remember. it was not that hard to give it some clearance and I wonder if the 1/4 inch I needed fhad to do with a 50 year old car vs the exhaust. I put a flex joint under the drivers feet, I had a hard time keeping that sealed. The flex joint and the SS did not seal well. I think the sound is fine. Not too loud for me. But then my mini is almost a straight open pipe.

i tell you. shove a couple of SS scouring pads up those pipes. does not hurt a thing and quiets it down at a very low expense. just run a ss screw in first to hold them in place.

Drone Dog, I'll give the scouring pad trick a try. Right now my BJ7 is hibernation for the long Montana winter so I won't know how this works out for several months yet.

We have a stainless system on our BJ7 (too many years to remember the manufacturer). It's quiet etc. etc., but I'd like to someday park beside someone with a stockish mild steel system as I'm suspicious that I'd like that sound a bit better. But there's a lot more design/build variables than just the material! Doug

I have had this exhaust for 4 years. It developed a drone at 2200 rpm and 3200 rpm. I called Moss. They said earlier models had a problem with packing burning out after awhile. They are in the process of replacing both mufflers under warranty now.

this is a good topic for me. i just went to put on my down tubes (front pipes) today and they are not the right ones for the car. i had planned to use them and mate them to the side exhaust. both items came with the car. but after trying to fit them up it became apparent they are not the right ones for this car. i assume they are for a BJ8.

anyway i am looking at the mild steel parts which come up to about 500 from Moss, the tourist SS system which is about 600, and Victoria British has the Falcon SS system for about 500.

i would love to hear suggestions. hmmm and does anyone need a set of BJ8 front pipes? IMG_2188.jpg

I have had one on my BJ8 for about 5 years and love it. Mine is a black car so the mufflers look good from the side. Overall, easy to install but I had to work it to get the best clearances as a PO had rigged the mounts.

FWIW, I think SS exhaust is pointless on a Healey, for a couple reasons:

- SS is nice if you drive a lot of short trips, too short to fully boil the moisture out of the pipes to mitigate rust-through
- you could make a Healey exhaust out of titanium, but you will still bash the crap out of it eventually (especially BJ8s)
- as mentioned on another discussion on this forum, your packing will be gone before the metal rots; do you really want to cut up a shiny SS exhaust (and can you weld SS)?
- personal opinion, of course, but shiny pipes detract from the timeless, elegant lines of a Big Healey (again: personal opinion)

My dad bought a Falcon SS for our 100M; I painted it black. It sounded tinny at first, but has mellowed with age. I only have a couple thousand miles on it, so can't attest to durability. Also, one of the English suppliers has a mild steel, 'Big Bore' exhaust. Whether or not it offers any performance improvements I couldn't say (probably only with headers).

I'm happy with the Moss Tourist Trophy SS exhaust system on my tricarb.
Sounds good to me.
Painted it black except the last 13 inches, which I polished.
The paint probably needs touching up where it has scraped on the speed bump down the street from my house.

I've fitted ss exhaust systems on Healey's from Moss now at least five times including my own.

I just fitted one to a TR4 and it was Oh so much easier than the Healey. It actually fitted with very little adjusting.

The Healey systems fit ok but you have to screw around with brackets to get it just right,,, there's not much room under there.

The big issue I've had, is that two of my customers returned their cars, both BJ8's to me to "adjust" as they had developed a rattle, took a while to find on the first car, about 20 seconds on the second.
The internals of the first box had come loose, it rattled on idle.

They have contacted Moss about this but yet to let me know the outcome.

i received my Moss system today. hope to install it tomorrow.

i started to post about putting the seat rails in so i could get the exhaust on... added the pictures and then thought i was getting off topic. i tried to delete the pics with the explanation but could not figure out hhow to get rid of the pics. sorry about that.
