MGB-GT MGB/GT Front Sway Bar Torque Setting

Offline
Can anyone tell me about the torque setting on the front sway bar link? My Haynes manual says 60 lb/ft, but doesn't say whether that's on the end that attaches to the A-arm or the sway bar end. None of the other manuals even provide a torque setting for the sway bar link. Unfortunately, I'm too mechcanically inept to figure it out. Does anyone know which end should be torqued?

Sway bar end has a thru bolt, 5/16" if my mind still works. It would turn to "taffy" with 60 ft/lbs. Gotta be the "ball" end at the A-arm. It seems a bit high even for that, tho: Fine thread and such. Torque it to 50, call it a day. It won't go anyplace.

Some place there is a list of bolt sizes and torque for them. It seems that each size is specific, application independent.

Yup. "Torque tables". Also can vary with the grade of bolt used.

yes of course should have said size and type.

Old and in the way. Hmm, Germantown, brother in law is from there, CEO of an engineering company in town so I get up there from time to time.

What are you working on?

Old and in the Way is Jerry Garcia's bluegrass band. Great stuff!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif

So is this Jerry Garcia or what? I mean, dosn't mean anything to me but would check it out if it was.

Yeah, it was Jerry Garcia, David Grissman, Vassar Clements and John Kahn. 1973-74 bluegrass project. Two pretty good albums. Kind of started the Newgrass thing. I'm working on a '70 B/GT that was built for the European market. Solid bumper instead of split, metal dash instead of padded. No pollution controls. Replacing the A-arm bushings with RV8 ones. Check in if you're in town. I found a couple of torque tables. I'm guessing about 25 lb/ft for the sway bar end; 55-60 for the A-arm link. Hope that's right. If anyone else has an opinion (heh, heh), please chime in.

No, Jerry died. He was the leader of Greatful Dead. If you are too young to remember try listening. Can get CDs at a library to listen to.

Too young, heck I am 67. Music just not a big deal for me except for big band and Healey pipes at about 7 grand.

Now back to the correct thread. My first manual does not have any torque values either. I will look through several other manuals I have to see if they are any different.

Great find!!

Torque numbers look right: "half a grunt" on the top ones, bottoms are "one grunt" each side /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Crank her down until you're comfortable & call it a day...don't know that I've ever worried about anti-sway bar bolt torques!

AAAhhh, Boots Randalph, Glen Miller, Bennie Goodman, I even remember the Andrews sisters! Nice to know that there are some of us still left. PJ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
