Does the original MGA generator have open holes over the brushes with the band cover or were they solid? PJ
 
ISTR the band.
 
The band around the MGA generator is to hold the coil. It doesn't use a band to seal the innards like earlier ones do. It is a C40 coil, like early MGB.
 
I think this generator on my TF is from an MGA. Did the tach drive on the MGAs come off the back of the generator, or were they electronic? There is a number on it showing 9-56, date maybe? PJ

 
Paul - The tach drive on a MGA comes off the camshaft not the generator. The Same generator used on the TD/TF was used on many different cars and you '56' could be a case from on of them, with the rear end plate coming from a T series car. Our 53 TD had a generator case like the one you have pictured and a later date on it.

The 54 TF I just got has the same generator. It's stamped with a 58 on it. I have an old TD generator that is stamped 52. Yours must have been replaced sometime later like mine.

Thanks guys! It's very evident that I know nothing about MGAs. I rebuilt this one, turning armature, new bearing, bushing and brushes. I don't know the output yet as I need to polarize it and that comes later after I get it wired properly. I thought of putting a band on it to make it look more authentic. PJ
