lost MG midget key!

OK guys I need your help. I had the local vocational school paint my Midget and they lost the key!!! Paint job looks great and no key. I took the back of the cylinder out and I can turn the car over with a screw driver but how do I release the steering wheel so I can drive it? Any ideas and how to get a replacement key? Thanks, Jerry

I'll assume that you have a newer Midget with the steering wheel lock.
This unit is held on with a saddle clamp around the steering column. The clamp bolts are special and generally cannot be removed with a standard wrench. They must be drilled out. If you can remove this unit, you will have to dissassemlbe it and remove the locking pin. The steeering lock is not really designed to be dissassembled, so this can be somewhat tricky. The replacement unit from Moss is pretty expensive too. You may find it's cheaper to get rid of the entire steering lock and replace it with a dash mounted "universal" key switch (available in most auto parts stores...but these do not exactly look very elegant if you're trying to keep the car original).
If you have not damaged the key cylinder unit too badly, it may be cheapest to have a locksmith come over and make a key for it.

Jerry, I guess now that the "horse is out of the barn," it's a good time to remind everyone that it's a great idea to have a back-up set of keys! (I know, that's really helpful advice at this point!)

For replacement keys, contact Pete Groh at British Car Keys He can help you find your key code, and cut you a key.

If all else fails, he'll send you a big ring of keys, and you keep trying all the keys until you find the one that fits your car! He's a great car, and a great resource.

Oh, and he might also have an answer for how to unlock the steering column....

Have had this problem before. Remove plastic cover, get a small air powered cut off wheel. Cut a deep cut in the top of each shear bolt, dead center. enough to get a good fit for a regular slot screw driver. Dont worry if you cut into the switch bracket some. You will have to cut into it some to get a good grip.Use a screw driver that accepts a wrench on the schank and undo the bolts. The object here is to turn bolts into screws. I have had sucess every time.

Moss sells decent key blanks for the right style...and most good locksmiths can cut it to fit your switch in about 10 minutes...but be prepared to pay a resonable service charge ;-)
