I hate MGs........

Over the weekend, whilst at the New Orleans British Car Day, I parked my TR6 next to a nice fella and his wife from Georgia. They drove their beautiful red MG all the way in from their home in Georgia. We both put our car covers on (same brand) at the hotel parking lot and tucked our babies in for the night. The next morning, the day of the show, we were outside at the same time, uncovering our cars and tidying up before the ride over to the show. Now, my TR6 is highly modified and has a gear reduction starter. It takes me about 30 seconds to get it to stop wheezing a roar (it really roars) to life. The nice guy in the pretty red MG turned his key once....the darn flywheel didn't make one revolution before his car settled down like a sewing machine to a nice, clear purr.

I hate MGs.

His car won first in class. So did I.

I am jealous.

Those old Lucas starters are really tough. As a kid I used to amaze my friends by starting my MGB with less than half a turn of the starter. I literally turned the starter until the instant I heard a click, then let go. The car would roar to life every time!

Of course it didn't roar quite as aggressively as a TR-6, but it was a roar to me nonetheless! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Mine lights off before I can let go of th' key... as does this Alfa 1750.

It's all in th' timing... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

That's nothing! I just have to *show* the key to Harold, and he starts right up

Mine was lighting off with a half turn of the starter for a while. Since then, I believe I've allowed my tinkering habits to adjust the air-fuel mixture out of the half turn light-off range. It's the whole, "hmmm... I seem to be running too rich. Lemme just dial down the mixture a bit" thing. Now I'm certainly running too lean, and it's making my light off more difficult.

Oh yeah, the other thing that has made light-off more difficult was changing my spark plugs from Bosche Platinum to NGKs. I'm not entirely sure I like the performance of these plugs. Then again, it could be all in my head that the plugs are at fault. I may switch back to Bosche Platinums again if this behavior keeps up.

Or I may wait and see how things pan out after I rebuild my HS6 and bolt it up.

There must be something about these "B" engines, because mine starts right up, too, barely a turn of the iginition, at least if its been running or it isn't too cold outside...

Mine starts on the first cylinder. Most of the time. Other times I have to crank it for a couple of minutes for some reason.

My TR6's the opposite of Bills - once it's
warmed up,it starts with just a tap of the key.
Same with my MKII Cortina.
Bill, maybe you need to park with the Cortinas
next time.

When I awoke the Midget after it's winter slumber, I didn't hear the starter. I just turned the key and it was running.
The Triumph, on the other hand..............

My former TF would start immediately. Shuting in down however, was a challenge.

Yep....I remember having to hold the brake, put in gear and let off the clutch in order to kill it.

Once I remember putting it in first and the car lurching BACKWARDS when I killed it.

Apparently the engine was running backwards???

Anyone else ever have this?

yeah... but I've fixed that with new plugs, wires, coil, and readjusted the air/fuel mixture. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Miss Agatha loves to run as well, starts right up as fast as you can turn loose of the starter.

Yup, I've seen it, Dave: switch off, thing *coughs* and starts to "diesel"... Backwards!

*shudder*
