GT6 Help on GT6 oil capacity

I changed the oil on my GT6 for the first time and was shocked to find that instead of 4 1\2 qts of oil I got 9 qts. I then filled the oil back up with 4 1\2 qts and it isn't even showing on the dip stick. So here is the question?

Do I have an oversized pan and do they have one that would be that big?

Or

Is the dip stick not the right one for the car?

Thank you for the help. Tom

Hi Tom,

My handy-dandy service quide says that it should be 9 pints, which would make your 4 1/2 quarts correct. I would suspect that the dipstick is incorrect, but the sump is a possibility. Since the dipstick is cheaper, I would recommend ordering a new one from Moss or another supplier, and see what that reads. I wish you luck.

So for any of you with a gt 6 how long should the dip stick be? No wise cracks
Tom

Tom, I just measured, and from the ferrule that holds the felt washer to the end is 11 11/16".
The "Full" line is at 9 3/4", and the "Add" is at 10 3/4".
My parts catalogue shows a different pan for the later models, but the same dipstick, P/N 127653.
So, now you know all you need to about GT6 dipsticks.
And I really hated the chance to pass up a couple of choice comments about "GT6 dipsticks"!
I get called that a lot by the MGB guys.

Well the dip stick is the same length as yours. 11 11\16 Now the question is how deep is the oil pan. Mine is 5 1\4 inches deep. From back of the pan to the front deep part of the pan is 12 inches long.

When I get to 5 qts of oil it just touches the bottom of the dip stick so my guess is that this is a 7 qt pan.

Have any of you seen bigger pans for these cars. I know they make them for other cars for racing and so on but I haven't been able to find one listed on the internet yet so I will refer to you guys for knowledge.

Thanks everyone for the help. Tom

Tom, I'll take some more measurements tomorrow, including how far out of the block the dipstick tube is. I've got a spare engine as well, so I'll measure that one, and the one in the car.
5 1/4" sounds about right for the depth of the pan. It's possible that the dipstick tube isn't in the block all the way.
The only big pans I've seen were ones that had an extension welded to them. If yours was modified, it would be obvious by the weld.

Thanks for the help. By dip stick tube sticks about 4 inches out from the block. Tom

Mystery solved. The gallon jug of oil used wasn't a full gallon or 5 qts. I stared over and drained all the oil and only 3 qts came out. Boy do I feel stupid but it shows that you need to watch everything. Thank for the help. Tom

Does your dipstick get oily now?

Don't feel bad, we've all had those moments.
At least you saved me a trip to the storage facility to take more measurements!
