Garage Floor is painted [Epoxy Paint]

Well, the Garagemahal is coming along. I finally got the finish coat of the epoxy paint applied this morning.
I bought the paint from www.ucoatit.com
It was not easy, mostly due to the time of year. Lots of junk blowing in the wind. It was difficult to keep that grass, and tree parts, bugs etc. out of the paint. I finally gave up on my strive for perfection. It was obvious mother nature was not gonna allow that.
Anyway 3 days of prep work, paint, and waiting between coats as been worth the wait.

how's a lbc going to mark it's territory on that?

The TR had already lifted it's rear wheel and dribbled on the floor before I painted it. So the car already marked it's territory /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
With this Epoxy Paint wiping up future "leavings" should be a breeze.

More than ten years ago I put down epoxy paint on the garage floor. It makes cleaning so much easier. The trouble now is that I have repainted two cars, changed oil several times and it is starting to show wear. We made the mistake of having a damp floor in a few places and the paint came up. The paint is much better, however than the plain concrete floor. When I finish my wife's Spitfire I'll have time and energy to repaint. T.T.

That floor looks great. Was there a coating on the floor before? How rough was it to start with and what was involved in the prep work? Could you have painted 1/2 of the floor at a time or is that discouraged by the paint maker?

The concrete was new. The manufacturer recommended that I wait one month for the concrete to dry before painting.

As for prep work, I had to sweep well, rinse with a garden hose. Then apply a diluted mixture of Muriatic Acid and water. Scrub that in, rinse, and repeat.
Then I and to dampen the floor slightly before applying the first coat of paint called the "Bond Coat". Then it was a matter of waiting for it to dry before applying the 2nd coat. Then wait again to apply the 3rd and final "Finish Coat"

I don't know if you can do one half of the garage at a time or not? I suppose you could, but it would make for more work.

Once you mix the paint with the Activator you only have about an hour to use it. So if you tried to do the floor in sections, it would riquire more mixing, and probably lead to using more paint.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with the product, and the results /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That floor looks really nice. That's something I would love to be able to do with mine.........but fixing and cleaning it up alone would cost a fortune. Probably cheaper to rip it up and start from scratch.

Looks great! But could you link to slightly smaller pictures - width of say, 600 pixels is about right.

Thanks,
Basil

Yep, home depot has Muriatic Acid. It's cheap too.

Here's the latest pic,

The TR is getting used to it's new digs /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

WOW! Great looking floor. I'd love to do that to my garage, as it has oil and brake fluid stains all over it. I think I'll say again how good your TR looks, too.

If I may be so bold, how many square feet, and what was the approximate cost to do this? I've been wanting to coat my garage since I moved in, but have been unsure of what the actual cost is.

Man that looks good, both the car and the garage floor.

I'd love to do that in my garage but theres 40 years of oil and grease on my floor, would probably take me forever to get it clean.

Gee, from the first pictures I thought you'd built an indoor pool.

Man I want to do this, oh wait, that means I'd have to build a garage...darn. Well, I'll just admire yours for a while.

The paint cost me $740(including shipping).
It cost me more than it should have because I got extra paint. The standard kit is supposed to cover approx. 576 sq. ft. (or a 24'x24' floor)

My garage is 24'x24', but we have a ramp going up into the garage that I wanted to paint too. So I had to buy 2 extra gallons of paint, and also 2 more cans of activator. I also paid extra for the Gloss coat finish.

The standard kit of epoxy paint (enough for 24'x24')=$249

The High Gloss Kit was an additional $209

The extra paint for the ramp was $124

The extra High Gloss paint for the ramp was $104

So it added up quick for me. I could have went cheap and not got the Gloss finish. I also may have been able to stretch the standard kit and got that ramp painted without buying extra paint. But I wanted make it as nice as possible(so I got the Gloss), and I did'nt want to come up short on paint(so I bought extra).

I have a half gallon of the epoxy paint left over, as well as a hole gallon of the Gloss finish. So had I known how it was gonna go I could have saved $104 by not buying that extra gallon of the Gloss Finish.

As for prepping the Grease & Oil spots. All you have to do is scrub them using a degreaser (I used 409). You scrub and rinse the spots until the spots no longer bead water. The spots are still there, but as long as water no longer beads up on them you're good to go. So it's not like you have to actually remove those spots completely.

Outstanding! I have marked this thread as a favorite! (In case I wantt o attempt this one of these days). Just really nice job!

Sammy B.,
You could never find enough street parking for all your cars to empty out the garage for painting.

And I just bought another car yesterday as a summer car for my wife. So I'm now officially out of garage, carport and driveway space. (One car is going to have to go -- probably the white '89 Corvette.)

For what it's worth I'd recomend the getting the Gloss Coat.

The gloss coat came with a different Activator. It smelled a lot stronger than the other coats I applied. It rolled on a lot nicer, and looks a lot better than the Standard paint without the Gloss coat.
The gloss coat really made for a nice job.
