Fuel Tank fitting and nipple

My new tank didn't come with a fitting or nipple.

I buggered up the brass tube nut getting the fitting/nipple off. It didn't want to give up and I had to use a big vice grip.

I went by the hardware store and it seems that the thread is not the same as the standard brass fittings they sell.

Moss lists the part as NA. VB seems to have it, but at 6.95 plus 8.95 shipping it's a pretty expensive nut. Spridgetmania also says NLA.

Anyone know what I am looking for and where to get it?

Here's a pic:

VB will work with you sometimes on shipping with small stuff, gotta call them.

Fred,

You should be able to rework the hex to still be usable, if if it's not the original size. Flare looks OK too. I would file new flat to the nearest standard size. I'm sure the thread is BSP, but it looks to be in good shape. I would use a little anti-seize and some teflon tape on installation.

Looks like a 3/16 bubble flare - just got some yesterday for the Vauxhall - paid about $3.95 plus whatever my guy charged me to make the flare - you can approximate the flare with a standard brake flare tool but he has a super duper fancy one - can post pics if you are interested?

Or, if the flare is good - I can possibly figure out a way to get you one of the fittings. Just heading out the door - if you want to measure yours I will post pics later this afternoon.

Fred,
I bought mine at a local hydraulic hose shop along with oil cooler hoses for my MGB. I was surprised that they carried BSP fittings and they said it was not unusual for them. Gerards method sounds like a good idea as well.

Found this post from a few years ago:

<<I have a new gas tank for my Bugeye that I am putting together (the new tanks all seem to be made by Spectra Premium in Canada). My Bugeye did not come with any fuel lines, so I need the fitting that goes to the gas tank. I am told that this fitting is 1/4 X 19 BSPP. Victoria British has the nut, but not the pipe end itself, which I guess I could have made possibly. Does anyone happen to have this part? Jim

My tank is also a Spectra Premium tank. They really should supply a new fitting and nipple with the tank since it is not readily available and I suspect most of the originals had the same treatment mine had.

I could re-use the old tube nut, but it was squeezed oval by the vice grips and when I tried to squeeze it back it cracked. You just can't see it in the pic.

I bit the bullet and ordered the nut from VB.

One other little wrinkle is that the original tank had a brass bung which matched the brass flare on the nipple. The new tank looks like it has a steel bung. I suspect the dissimilar metals could lead to problems down the line. I wonder what material the VB part will be?

Next issue will be plumbing in an electric fuel pump and running fuel line. My original fuel line is for the mechanical pump.

I found out from Moss tech support that they do have a fuel line for the TR3 that has the correct fitting for the Bugeye tank. Don't know why they don't list it for the Bugeye.
