Fuel pump noise

After draining the gas tank and adding new unleaded, the car (64 sprite) won't start. Also, for the first time, I hear the fuel pump making a chugging noise. Should it stop once pressure is pumped up?

all the electric fuel pumps I've had on other vehicles make a real racket until they're filled with fuel. It's probably just struggling to get the air out of the lines...

My Mini has an aftermarket pump that "rattles" even louder when the system is full. The BJ8, on the other hand, has the standard SU unit that gets quiet when the system is full.

Check the carb bowls, if they are full it should have enough to fire and run a short while. If the bowls are dry, you probably have a blockage somewhere.

Sometimes when the fuel is emptied or if you run out of gas, you have to sort of prime the fuel pump.
The easiest way is to switch on the key and blow into the gas filler neck.
Yeah, by mouth. You will feel it build pressure and the fuel pump will start to work properly.
You have to force the gas over that hump in the fuel line.

I just did the same with my 64 -- I agree w/ "Spritenut" (above) about the need to prime everything. You don't mention if you have the original pump or a replacement electric. If your car is positive ground (mine is) and you hook up the electric pump "normal" -- it will spin in reverse. Make sure polarity is proper (reverse to American cars).

I made this mistake and eventually figured it out -- presto !! I did have to prime -- just poured some gas through the tubing attached to carbs, where my clear fuel filter is -- a good easy way to view fuel condidtion and if things are flowing.

Good luck --

got it running

One of the fuel bowls was overfilling plus the car was running on 2 cylinders. I need to learn about SUs before I go further. Thanks for all of the help so far, the fuel pump ias finally quieting down.
