Frame reinforcing techniques

Several years ago, one of the club magazines had an article describing how to add gussets and another cross member to stiffen the frame. I believe the author made the components himself.

Two questions: 1. Has anyone installed these additional stiffeners to their frame and if so, was it a worthwhile addition? Or do you have any comments about the reasonableness of doing this modification?

2. Does anyone remember about when (year and month) the article was published in the magazine?

Thanks,

No Rob, not much help there.
But gussets on the sides of the front engine mount supports and "boxing" in the inboard open side leaving space at the top to access the bolts if required is a significant improvement for 6 Cly cars. Similarly, gussets added to the lower a frame pivot supports add a measurable amount of stiffness here too.---Keoke

Note "Boxing"

Rob,
I did most of the work as stated above and I also installed gussets on both sides of all outriggers where they attach to the main frame rails. I also reinforced the sides of the outriggers with a 12 gauge plate welded to all outriggers. I also installed a 12 gauge plate where the frame rails reduce in dimension from the rear shock support all the way to the rear cross member on both sides of both rails. All this work was an effort to reduce the chance of frame sag and loosing the door gaps. I did the work myself so cost was not an issue. I can send you pictures if you are interested. Hope this helps and have a good day!

John
