Anybody with experience/thoughts on the magnetic plates for the outside of the filter canister. Part No. ENG689 FILTERMAG at https://www.ahspares.co.uk JMH
Doesn't the oil pass from the inside of the filter to the outside? If so, the magnet would be after the oil has been filtered, and wouldn't be of much use. If it goes the other way, it may catch something, but the typical metal particles suspended in the oil are non magnetic. Bearing material and such.
Jeff
I would not be surprised if it was as effective as those magnets that go around the fuel line to increase economy. Guess you’d have to cut open the old oil filter and try to see a band of metal particles under the sludge to gauge it’d usefulness.

I believe the oil flows the other way; from the outside of the filter media and returns through the core.
I've wasted lots of time cutting oil filters open to see what's been trapped inside them, and the debris is held between the canister and media.
So the magnets, while not improving fuel economy, will catch iron particles (whether or not they would've been contained anyway is subject to speculation).
I can't help but put a plug in for systematic oil analysis though. In the past I've relied on Titan Labs, but for the past few years have been using Blackstone, because of their very quick turn-around (usually 3-4 days). Here's an example from one (1) of my cars: https://www.rfdm.com/Randy/Maintenance/oilAnalysis/01/
The link (date) at the bottom of each column will link to the actual report.
Generally filters, oil or otherwise, have a flow path from the larger area to the smaller area. In this case, that would be "outside to inside".
Like Randy, I've always wondered if the ferrous particles aren't of a size that would be caught by the filter anyway. If you want to try the magnets you may not be improving anything but you certainly aren't hurting anything.

I've cut apart enough oil filters on the race car to know which way the oil flows. Chalk it up to a senior moment.
Spectrometric Oil Analysis is a good deal, and can sure show incipient failures before something expensive happens. I'm a firm believer in the program myself.
