Engine Rebuilders in Northern NJ - Recommendations

Howdy Folks-

I decided to measure the 'bored .020 over' 948 block that came with my Bugeye project.

Bores vary from .020 over to .030 over. Sigh. I kept checking and double checking my bore gauge, and the numbers didn't change.

So, not having used any up here in 20 years, can anyone recommend a reliable shop, preferably in Bergen County?

Thanks-

Mike

Not super close (Malvern, PA) but Ralph at Cloverleaf does great work:

I know at least one person I wouldn't recommend that's in northern NJ. You can PM me if you want that info.

The guy I use in Toms River knows his stuff too.
And I have a 948 engine you can have if you get it out of my storage spot.
It may be good, it may be an anchor, in fact, you have 2 to choose from and one even has a transmission attached, again, I no nothing about them, they came with or out of parts cars, never started, never driven by me.
If nothing else, I can give the machine shop a block to check the bores or rebore for you.

Go around and visit anyone who knows what an A-40 engine is is a prime canadite.

Contact Spritenut, AKA Frank. If he says he has a good resource, I would go with it. He is an acknowledged expert here, and on the spridget list. A decent, honest and reliable machinist is worth his weight in gold, and it is almost impossible to find one de novo.

Spritenut-

Thanks - Toms River isn't that far for me, and if this guy already knows these engines, I'm happy to use him if you're satisfied.

Can you give me his contact information?

Thanks-

Mike

(behind Norwood auto parts)

I just left his shop with my rods trued up.
He has an engine of mine for a future project that is getting bored.
He is closed on weekends, 9-5 weekdays.
Modern plastic car stuff and dealer supplied stuff are his bread and butter these days but he is an old school shop and loves the old car parts that he learned on back in the day when our cars were new.
He did all the machine work and a rebore on a guys Midget engine from PA, I helped the guy assemble it and it is perfect.
All my engines never had a problem and I am currently refreshing an engine I (we)
did back in 1998, he asked me today why? because everything looks fine.
He did true up 2 of the rods, they were out .001

Mike,

Unless your really into originality, I would look for a 1275 engine, before I put alot of money into a 948 rebuild.

Hi Mike-

I am in the process of rebuilding my 1275.
I have at my disposal quite of few top MG resources, including machining.
I talked with Hap (and got a price) before deciding to take on
the project myself. I REALLY wanted to do it myself, for my
education as well as enjoyment/experience. But I have learned
something in the process. When I am all done, I will have nearly
the identical money in my own build that I would have had if I
just gave the project to Hap. Make no mistake, I am glad I took
the build on myself, but it was not for any money savings.
Good luck on your project.

Paul

I have a 948 with only about 3K miles on it. 155 on all four. Just had a engine shipped from the other coast for $175. Make me a offer off the list.
